An enjoyable account of the origins and evolution of the concept of fallen angels in Jewish and Christian world views for a general audience. Bamberger starts with a brief introductory discussion of those few passages from the Tanakh (Old Testament) which are often referenced in later writings on Satan or fallen angels. But the book really gets started with those writings that Bamberger calls the "outside books." That is the books outside the canonical tradition-the Enoch writings, the Adam books, and various testaments and apocalypses. Bamberger then discusses the separate and distinct traditions that developed in Judaism and Christianity from the periods of the Talmud and the New Testament through the middle ages to contemporary theology. Contemporary, that is to the late 1940s when this book was written. Throughout the book, Bamberger is especially interested in contrasting the dualistic views of some of the outside books, the Zohar, and Christian theology which saw the Cosmos divided between warring camps of good and evil with the traditional Jewish view that sees Satan as an agent of an unopposed and unopposable God. It's unfortunate that Bamberger did not have access to the Dead Sea Scrolls. The extreme dualism of the Dead Sea Sect would have been an interesting addition to this study. I did find this book to be good preparation for approaching the duelist teachings of the Dead Sea Sect. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this book is the contrast between Jewish and Christian approaches to similar concepts. I have often heard people speak of the Judeo-Christian concept of Satan. This book makes clear that there is no such thing. If you're interested in the dark side of Jewish and Christian mythology, this is a book you will want to read.

This is a great authentic cookbook. The recipes/text are printed with Spanish on one side and English on the opposite side of the same page. However, the English text is soft and almost melon colored and very difficult to see.

In the process, they vernacularized Christianity, endured the ravages of colonialism and apartheid, used their historical connections to the Methodist Church and South Africa's land reform legislation to regain land, and launched the Farmerfield experiment anew, amid new debates about the meaning of post-apartheid land access and citizenship. Farmerfield's propitious rise, protracted, frustrating decline and fledgling reincarnation reflect epochal chapters in South Africa's colonial, apartheid, and post-apartheid history as Africans attempted to define the terms of their cultural autonomy and economic independence.

About the Author

Kurt Ament is a technical writer, editor and indexer with extensive experience in print and online publishing. Since 1988 he has developed automated indexing systems, corporate style guides, knowledge management systems, master glossaries, master indexes, and user interface guidelines for companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Hughes Aircraft Company, Symantec Corporation, and Xerox Corporation. A graduate with honors of philosophy from the University of California at Berkeley, he completed a five-year sequential program in technical communication at UCLA. He is a senior member of the Society for Technical Communication.

A Good Quick Reference

At only 86 pages (excluding its own index and prefatory material), this book is not going to make you a master indexer, but it IS a great quick reference to the subject. As a technical writer for 25 years, I was pleased to find that I learned a few things from it. And although some of the topics seem common-sense rather than innovative, it never hurts to be reminded of the basics.
I also like the format of the book--it's very easy to find specific topics and to dip into it to answer a specific question. I am buying a copy for each writer in my publications department!

Indexing: A Nuts-and-Bolts Guide for Technical Writers

I honestly wanted to like this book; instead, I was quite disappointed. The author's basic premise is that indexing is not "rocket science" and that anyone can index quickly and effectively if they follow his ten-step technique. Unfortunately, the book's index, which has many flaws, defeats the author's premise.
Many of the index's problems involve See references. The author advises authors to create as many of them as possible. That is analagous to ruining a good recipe with as much pepper as you can find! Readers do not appreciate being bounced around the index unnecessarily.
The author also advises writers not to edit an index until they have created all of the entries for it. That strategy (not doing interim edits) almost guarantees that the index will be flawed ... and the index for this book is proof of that...

Good for Beginning Indexers

I used this book for my first major indexing project and it worked well for me. I appreciated the easy to find details for each step. The process also dovetailed nicely with my modular topic-driven content that could tie back to the steps. For example, to index topics that are considered procedures, I simply followed the steps on indexing procedures. I know that after I get more experienced with indexing I will want to branch out and read up more on the "art" of indexing, but for now I'm happy to use Ament's approach.

This confession is excellent. I do however have major issues with the ...

I personally adhere to the BF&M. This confession is excellent. I do however have major issues with the commentary that comes along with the articles. They are VERY slanted towards arminianism and in places edge on pelagianism. I understand that this was written to be a book for mass publication to be used inside a local church for study, but sometimes simplicity runs the risk of being incomplete and runs the danger of steering people the wrong direction theologically. The BF&M is interpreted many different ways, but the study portion of this is way too one sided. Article V for example on election is one of the worst of this. Article V in the BF&M is almost verbatim from the New Hampshire Confession. While this confession was meant to be softer on Calvinism than previous confessions it was still written with a Calvinistic view of election. Herschel in his explanation of Article V, in my opinion, was so far off base it made very little sense. The confession is excellent, but this study guide leaves a lot to be desired.

Barton Is One Of The Best Authors In Radar

Having read Barton's Modern Radar System Analysis (Artech House Radar Library) and enjoying it so much, I had to purchase this work. Barton is one of the best writers in the subject of radar that I have come across. He is thorough and does an excellent job of explaining even the more difficult-to-understand topics in radar design and analysis. I can honestly say that reading his works is a genuine pleasure. It is difficult for me to select any one specific area to highlight as being the best but I can say that his treatment of the Radar Range Equation, which includes coverage of the equation in the presence of active jamming and clutter, and his discussions of target detection theory and interference are excellent. He also present a very good and accessible discussion of Radar Error Analysis.

The book comes with a CD containing a trial version of MathCad 11 but I didn't attempt to even determine if it would run on my 64-bit Vista system. My primary interest was in the text itself.

If you are new to radar and wish to obtain a thorough introduction to radar theory (without having to be a radar engineer to begin with), I couldn't recommend better authors than Barton, or Edde's Radar: Principles, Technology, Applications. technically complex explanation of [declassified] state of the art

It does not say so on the cover, but Barton points out in his Introduction that this book is actually the 3rd edition of a text, where the 2nd edition was published in 1988. The 3rd edition was motivated in no small part by advances in radar analysis and computing power since then.

As the book amply makes clear, radar analysis and modelling is very compute intensive. In 1988, some of the calculations might have necessitated one or more minicomputers. One attraction of the book is the lengthy set of nontrivial problems at the end of each chapter; which the reader is urged to tackle. Nowadays, these can be done on a personal computer, using some maths package. Hence the book's accompanying CD. However, instead of using Mathematica or Maple, Barton chose the rarer Mathsoft. The reason is that the intermediate steps are made available, so that you can easily modify these for your situations.

The radar applications in the text are heavily directed towards military usages. For historical reasons, and also because these tend to be the most technically demanding, in terms of rapid detection and identification. (See the enemy before he sees you.) With forays into Electronic Counter Measures and ECCM.

By the way, antenna design gets one lonely chapter. Perhaps somewhat cursory. But this subject is itself worthy of length monographs, and is not really the main topic here.

The level of discussion is clearly aimed at a engineer already in the field. A sophisticated, technically complex narrative. Showing as best as can be done on a declassified level, the limits of current analysis. Not representative of the GRE Math Subject Test.

I really wanted to like this book. However, as a GRE tutor who has taken the test multiple times to keep current with its content, I'm disappointed to say that this test is nothing like the GRE Math Subject Test. Yes it covers the same topics, but it consists almost entirely of trick questions, most of which just so happen to be like the tricks taught in the author's GRE prep course (which is equally overpriced), but are mostly unlike anything you'd actually have to use on the real test. While there are still a handful of good tips to be found in this book (and the course), there's almost none of it that you can't get from Princeton Review, which remains the best prep material out there (besides the actual practice tests of course!) for the GRE Math Subject Test. Don't waste your time or money on this.

About the Author
Tom VanDamme is the Executive Director of Falling Apple Science Institute (FASI). Falling Apple Science is a non-profit organization working to promote the understanding of natural science. "Seasons & the Celestial Sphere" represents the third book of a series of science books intended to provide the basis for an inductive science curriculum for middle and high schools. A Students' and Teachers' Guide will be published at a later date. David Harriman serves on the board of Falling Apple Science Institute. His book, "The Logical Leap: Induction in Physics" provides the foundation for the inductive methodology followed in this science series.

A New Inductive Way of Teaching Science!

This is the third of three new books on Astronomy that teach the subject using inductive teaching methods. The clarity of the approach helped me see connections I had never noticed before. After taking this course I woke up in the middle of the night and noticed the moon was rising in the East. It was a waning quarter moon, so I figured from its position that the sun would be rising in about three hours. Later in the morning I noticed that two planets were now rising in the East. Though I knew they were probably Jupiter and Venus, a quick look at my HELI-O-MATIC Planet Finder from Falling Apple confirmed that fact. I want to personally thank Falling Apple for designing this course. It works just as well for older folks like me as I am sure it does for the young! This is a whole new way of introducing the subject of Astronomy and teaching science in general.
