More Peices to the puzzle, but...

July 2014: Since writing many book reviews of the past, much has changed, I have discovered much more. I have come to see and have had exposed many of the deceptions and errors associated with Gnosticism, this even after becoming a Gnostic priest. My faith in Christ has been my anchor and I press on with him who shed his blood for me. I am tempted to delete many of my reviews, as I have already done; time will tell.

I enjoyed reading this book, as it is a very informative and easy book to read. There is a lot to learn when it comes to Egyptian Deities and this book gives some nice insights. A very good breakdown when it comes to Nut, Geb and Shu and their function in creation. Dr. Muata Ashby also gives a very good explanation of the Obelisk and Ankh and their esoteric sexual meanings. I was glad to see that this book included some sexual sublimation exercises although brief and simplistic. Still, this may be a good thing. What I also found most beautiful were the insights and connections to Christian esotericism.

This book is by no means exhaustive when it comes to information on Tantra. It does however have many beautiful insights into the Egyptian Tantra mysteries, while holding that one abstains from losing ones sexual energy. My one big problem that I have with this book is Dr Muata Ashby's view that Tantra can be performed just as effectively through celibacy. Still, he mentions that if you are married to not think that you are worse off than a celibate person and to remain married. I hold that Tantra performed by a couple can produce greater energies and potentials than of a single person. This is of course for couples who both have the goal of spiritual advancement at heart. I am of course talking about White Tantra as opposed to grey or Black (even exluding morality, the latter are a waste of time ultimately). I am however glad to see that Dr Muata Ashby does say that marriage provides a great environment for people to work on themselves. I have ordered five more of Dr Muata Ashby's other books and am especially eager to read on the laws of Maat. On the whole a very worth while book to read for those interested in Tantra and liberation.

This book really broke down the purpose of sexuality. The author clearly articulated the purpose of tantric yoga ; and yoga as a whole. I learned a lot about how the sexual energy should be used , and it's divine purpose.

A high water mark for post-apocalyptic fiction

Amazing, in every form. Pacing, conceptual depth, execution, gravity. Octavia E. Butler is a celestial genius, yet grounded enough in her writing to allow us earth-dwelling captives of gravity to join her, even if only for a short time.

These books also feel very timely and prescient to me, reflecting a world that we increasingly creep toward with the passing of time. I hope Butler's thoughts help others wrap their mind around the gift of life in the darkest moments of existence.

I would compare this favorably to "The Road" (Cormac McCarthy). It deserves at least as much acclaim. McCarthy uses mystery deliberately to focus on his subject matter. Butler's "Parables" narrate a relatively expansive universe with amazing and even frightening technical accuracy, without ever being dry (compare to the "Red/Green/Blue Mars Trilogy"). If someone wants to dive in to the subject matter of The Road with a bit more detail and without disappointment, this short series offers them a fantastic option.

Octavia Butler is so good. Her subject matter is never easy, but she is such a good writer that you read it anyway, taking part with the characters in their struggles.

Carlos Machado was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At the age of four he started his path in the martial arts, learning from his relatives the popular style known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After attending law school in Rio, he decided to switch the "suit" for the "kimono", and teach the martial arts he fell in love with at an early age. Carlos with his four junior siblings known as the "Machado Brothers" after 20 years of teaching have been among the pioneers in the popularization of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in America. Training tens of thousands of students and spreading the art of brazillian Jiu-Jitsu in all 50 states and across the world. Today he mentors a growing number of students, spread out all over the world. Many seek his knowledge on the mat, and in his perspective on the philosophy of Jiu-Jitsu. As he simply states, "I am not here to teach martial arts, but to change people's lives!"

Excellent new selection

Carlos Machado is the highest ranked BJJ black belt in the south. Being able to read his thoughts in one well put together book is nothing less than exceptional. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great motivational piece.

What a great book for anyone to read. The quotes can be applied to so many areas of your life and not just the Martial Arts. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the wisdom in Professor Machado's words.

Enlightening

There are few of us who glimpse enlightenment through dedicating our Self fully to life. Carlos Machado is one of these rare examples that lift all of us a little higher. We are all fighters in life and Grand Master Machado very eloquently shares his insights gained fighting and living for every inch, every second, every breath and every smile.

About the Author
Michael P. McKinley received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, and both MS and PhD degrees from Arizona State University. In 1978, he accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) Medical School in the laboratory of Dr. Stanley Prusiner, where he worked for 12 years investigating prions and prion-diseases. In 1980, he became a member of the anatomy faculty at the UCSF Medical School, where he taught medical histology for 10 years while continuing to do research on prions. During this time, he was an author or co-author of more than 80 scientific papers. Michael was a member of the biology faculty at Glendale Community College from 1991 to 2012, where he taught undergraduate anatomy and physiology, general biology, and genetics. Between 1991 and 2000, he also participated in Alzheimer disease research and served as director of the Brain Donation Program at the Sun Health Research Institute, as well as teaching developmental biology and human genetics at Arizona State University, West. His vast experience in histology, neuroanatomy, and cell biology greatly shaped the related content in Human Anatomy. He retired from active teaching in 2012 and continues to be an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). Michael is coauthor of the McKinley/O'Loughlin/Bidle: Anatomy & Physiology: An Integrative Approach textbook. He resides in Tempe, AZ, with his wife Jan. Valerie Dean O'laughlin received her undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary, and her PhD in biological anthropology from Indiana University. She is an Associate Professor of Anatomy at Indiana University School of Medicine, where she teaches human gross anatomy to medical students, basic human anatomy to undergraduates, and human anatomy for medical imaging evaluation to undergraduate and graduate students. She also teaches a pedagogical methods course and mentors MS and PhD students pursuing anatomy education research. She is active in the American Association of Anatomists (AAA) and the Society for Ultrasound in Medical Education(SUSME). She currently is serving as President of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). She received the AAA Basmajian Award for excellence in teaching gross anatomy and outstanding accomplishments in scholarship in education. Valerie is coauthor of the McKinley/O'Loughlin/Bidle: Anatomy & Physiology: An Integrative Approach textbook.

Beware of Connect

This books comes bundled with an access code for Connect, which is an online portion of the book. This was required for my online anatomy class. The entire book is also on the website so if an actual book is not important to you, all you really need is the Connect Access card. This Connect card costs $150 on its own and is only good for one registration.

My point is that if you are renting this book and the Connect code is required for your class, you may be wasting your money. If it doesn't come with the card, you will be paying money to rent the book but you will still have to buy the code separately as well. My school had a couple of cards for purchase in the bookstore in the case of people who bought their book used or rented it.

The book itself weighs a ton. I don't think I've ever had a textbook quite as heavy. Overall the book seems nice though and the online Connect portion is really helpful. You can purchase a loose-leaf version of this book from the Connect website and as mentioned before, the entire book is also on the website.

Average textbook. It was a required textbook. The text is full of inaccuracies and is vague in it's interpretations. I used other texts and google to supplement this text. The professor stated that this was the best option of all the A&P textbooks they reviewed, but he didn't prefer it. He stated that it was full of inaccuracies as well and frequently had to correct the text in his lectures. I had to fight when I missed points on an exam because the text was incorrect. Luckily, the professor admitted that the text was incorrect gave credit for knowing the material from the text. Sadly, the text information is wrong!! There are better texts out there. The only rewards from briefly owning this text is that I learned something and I'm selling it back for more than I paid for it.

Most orders DO NOT come with the Connect Plus access card which renders this textbook useless! For sanity and for the money in your wallet, do not buy this on amazon. Amazon would make a fortune if they guaranteed the cards, but alas they do not!

Challenging but fun; for diehards and advanced guitarists only

For the price, this book is a good deal for the right person: a diehard Mario fan with advancing guitar skills. You get a lot of theme songs that span different games from different consoles.

You have to a be somewhat advanced in your guitar skills to be able to tackle this book. If you're just starting out with your guitar education, this book will be beyond your skill level and may prove to be a bit frustrating. Most of the songs require a fair bit of quick chord changes and advanced picking techniques as well as the ability to move up and down the fretboard.

I also think that only a diehard Super Mario fan will fully appreciate this book. I grew up with Super Mario and have fond memories of some of the games but I have to admit that I'm not completely well-versed in the Super Mario universe and so many of the themes in the book were pretty unknown to me. The themes that I do recognize were enjoyable and the others that I didn't recognize, I found on Youtube to familiarize myself. If you aren't a big fan, these theme songs will mean nothing to you and may not be particularly enjoyable because some of them are short snippets and fanfares.

The book is printed on nice, glossy high-quality papers with small artwork on each page. Unfortunately, both the notation and tablature are rather small and difficult to read (I guess to keep most of the themes on a single or half page). I would have preferred that they spent their budget on more pages of decent quality with a larger font rather than less but high-quality paper with barely legible font. Also, the way the book is bound makes it difficult to keep open. Those are my only complaints. Also, nothing was included from Mario Kart Double Dash (GameCube) which was my favorite Mario game.

In sum, it's great for diehard fans who really know their guitar. Casual guitar players and video game fans as well as beginning guitarists will probably have a lukewarm reaction to this guide.

Couldn't be happier!

I was looking around for guitar books because I bought a new guitar. I wanted to take lessons, which I've started. I bought this so when I play well enough I can play these tunes from the greatest video game series of all time. I would strongly suggest buying this if you play guitar and are a huge Super Mario Bros. fan.

Not for beginners.

I'm a collegiate level classical guitarist. I got this for students expecting it to be simple and some of the songs are, but I have begun using several of them as exercises for myself. Well arranged. Notation style tab (for those of you that really don't read music except rhythms). Great book.
