ATATURK by ANDREW MANGO

An excellent review of not just Ataturk's biography but the last days of the Ottomans and the nascent years of the Turkish Republic. The work cuts through the legends that have developed around this historical person as he became deified by the nation he created and presents him as a man, with his strenghts and weaknesses. Mango's perspective is clearly Turkophile. Those interested in the history of other ethnic groups like Kurds and especially Armenians will find the book disappointing. References to the events of 1915 are very scant and presented entirely from the Turkish Nationalist perspective. There has not been a good book written by a Westerner about Ataturk since Lord Kinross's classic. Mango's effort, with a more contemporary perspective, and much more detail about day-to-day events is likely to eventually rate in the same category. I would highly recommend this book to anyone deeply interested in the subject.

I buy every book I can find on archery and I have learned something new from each one. I especially love the detailed guidance in this book on fine tuning a bow. the author is also British and his perspective and terminology is just a little bit different from that used by authors from the USA. a different perspective equates to a fresh approach. I think the title says it all but the author painstakingly explores all the variables that can impact your shot. don't miss this one

An excellent introduction to the equipment, setup and basic technique of Olympic Recurve Archery

Mr. Needham does an excellent job of introducing the technology, equipment, setup and basic techniques needed to get anyone started with Olympic Archery. He even goes so far as to describe the methods necessary to create one's own bow string (something I've not really considered before now). The chapters on setup and tuning are extremely useful as some of the material available online can be confusing to the novice.

Overall I would rate this book a must buy for anyone looking to take up the sport or has already had a basic introduction at a club and is now looking to purchase their first bow and advance to a more competent level.

While Bruce Lee is generally thought of as a martial arts specialist who made movies and at 33 died under mysterious circumstances, his public perception does not usually include that of a master philosopher. Little (Precision Training: The New Method To Achieve Optimum Muscularity, Power Factor Pub., 1995) attempts to remedy that in this compelling and interesting book, written with the blessing of Lee's estate. A student of Lee's "jeet kune do" form of martial art, Little was given access to heretofore unreleased personal notes, sketches, and reading annotations. What is revealed is a man who read extensively and was well versed in the philosophies of both East and West. Even more relevant today

I think this book would benefit everyone that picks it up. I am only through the first half of the book since I got the book 2 days ago, but it is profoundly simplistic. I've read a lot of books with similar subjects, but this is so simple that you can't help but instinctually agree with what is being said. The ideas that I need to align myself to be in tune with nature and flow like water are really opening up my mind to new possibilities of calm within myself. I think as the book points out, our Western philosophy is to fight with all our might until we have succeeded. Sometimes we could succeed if we just let things flow and happen as they may. I truly look forward to finishing this book and then reading through it 2 or 3 more times right away to make sure I have drawn every ounce of wisdom from it possible. This will need to be an annual read for sure. I recommend this book to anyone with an open mind and a desire to be at peace with their self.

If you collect US coins there is simply no better referrence than this book. It is absolutley full of useful and vital information for the serious collector. Its expensive, but worth every penny.

About the Author

Howard Spodek received his B.A. degree from Columbia University (1963), majoring in history and specializing in Columbia’s newly designed program in Asian Studies. He received his M.A. (1966) and Ph.D. (1972) from the University of Chicago, majoring in history and specializing in India. His first trip to India was on a Fulbright Fellowship, 1964–66, and he has spent a total of some twelve years studying and teaching in India. He has also traveled widely throughout the United States, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. He has been a faculty member at Temple University since 1972, appointed Full Professor in 1984. He was awarded Temple’s Great Teacher designation in 1993.

Spodek’s work in world history began in 1988 when he became Academic Director of a comprehensive, innovative program working with teachers in the School District

of Philadelphia to improve their knowledge base in world history and facilitate a rewriting of the world-history program in the schools. Immediately following this program, he became principal investigator of a program that brought college professors and high-school teachers together to reconsider, revise, and, in many cases, initiate the teaching of world history in several of the colleges and universities in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Those projects led directly to the writing of the first edition of the current text (1997).

South Africa After the Aparthied

It's an interesting book if one wants to examine the lives of Black South Africans living in a big city after the apartheid. Most of the the people in these neighborhoods have moved from countryside and live in a separate world from White South Africans. The unique thing about this book is that it doesn't deal with White vs Black issues, but its main focus is the attitude and prejudices of Black South Africans toward other Black South Africans and immigrants from other African countries. Interestingly, the rural people feel like Blacks in a city like Johannesburg are dirty, with low morals, and no good can come from associating with them. Their views on Immigrant African are even worse. The epidemic of AIDS is understood in the light of these views--it is believed that it was brought by Black African immigrants from countries like Nigeria.

One Word: Amazing

I was assigned this book for a class on globalization, and I was not very excited to read it. However I was pleasantly surprised to find myself not just able to get through it, but actually enjoying it.
Phaswane Mpe is a phenomenal writer, who developed deep, complex characters and truly embodied the state of mind that is xenophobia. The story he created will capture you and your
curiosity of the unknown; and if you do know a lot about Africa and xenophobia, it will still pull you in with its relatability and a fantastic storyline.
This book is thought provoking, engaging, sad, and at times, amusing.

Good start - Poor finish

The first five or six chapters are interesting but after this the book gets very repetitive. I was hoping for some real insights and experiences about the times Gates spent as Secretary but most of the writing was limited to broad generalisations about people and events. I gave up on the book before the end.

Good read...although somewhat repetitive.

This book is a good read. It is really a bunch of vignettes of Robert Gates experiences and little teaching lessons associated. After a while it does get a bit repetitive, but all in all quite a good read. Recommend if you work with people and aim to be a leader.

Great Human Factors Book!

I've read a lot on the subject of aviation psychology and human factors during my time as a student in aviation, and this book is among the best of what's available. Written by two active experts in the field of aviation psychology, the book provides an in-depth look at the subject, including summations of much of the significant research that has been done in the field.

For a student in the field on aviation, whether you're a pilot, a controller, or even just an interested researcher, I would highly recommend this book.

I used this book for a semester-long research assignment at my college. As an aviation student in the past, this has been by far the most informative and well-written book relating to aviation. I can appreciate the author's extensive knowledge on how different human factors effect our reflexes as pilots, especially the psychological factors with gender differences. Overall, excellent quality... would recommend reading and using for reference.
