My Plan to Ruin Your Life: The first workbook written by your addiction, by Ken Montrose

My Plan To Ruin Your Life is a workbook geared to help people struggling to see how their addiction controls them. The voice of the workbook is the reader's addiction.

ADDICTION'S INTRODUCTION
Don't be mad, I'm here to improve your chances of staying sober. I wrote this workbook to tell you exactly how I plan to destroy your life, just to see if that would make the game a little more interesting.
Just to be really fair I’ll leave space for you to plan how you will defeat me. I’ll walk you right up to the trap, show you all the slippery spots, and let you see what I’m using for bait. You do what you can to stop me.

MARKETING MISERY:
As part of my "EVERY ADDICT LEFT ON HIS BEHIND" program, I've come up with a drug for everyone. I've even got heroin cheap enough for kids to buy with the money they made flipping burgers.

STRENGTH BASED ADDICTION
Any con man can use someone's weaknesses. I will use your strengths against you. For example, I will convince the intellectual he's not an alcoholic sex addict, he's " “caught between man’s inherent bacchanalian, yet life-affirming tendencies, and the puritanical substitution of the Biblical for the bibulous life.”

CHANGE THE WAY I LOOK
I will change my appearance to suit the market. Tomorrow I will look like a single mom's dream man: good job, honest, considerate, and kind to her eight year old son. When I light up that first joint, she’ll forget everything they told her in rehab. Two years from now her son will be in foster care. I’ll be long gone. She’ll be kneeling behind a dumpster earning money for crack. Her self-loathing will hurt more than the gravel in her knees.

CHANGE THE WAY THE DRUG LOOKS
I will make sure people from all walks of life see me the way I want them to see me:
☺To the overworked executive/mom, I will look like a glass of sophisticated relaxation and escape.
☺To the eighteen year old intellectual, I will look like edible insight.
☺To the union worker, I will look like a can of solidarity and brotherhood.
☺To the lonely fourteen year old, I will look like a big cloud of acceptance.
☺To the lawyer who just won the big case, I will look like a powdery line of success.

BADGER YOU
“Your day sucked,” I’ll whisper. “Clearly that’s God’s way of telling you it’s time to get high.”

FIND AN INTERNET ADDICTION FOR YOU
You’ll start by downloading free soft porn and end up paying for live performances on your credit card. “OK, this time shave his head and throw in some jumper cables....”

CONVINCE YOU THAT YOU REALLY AREN'T ADDICTED
I'll make you believe you’ve cured twenty-five years of addiction after one night in detox, or that your prescription abuse is somebody else’s fault. (Did you know that Adam claimed the snake put a piece of the apple in his mouth while he was sleeping?) I'll tell you the way you use your drug is not that bad and other people do worse. “If I ever inject it there, I’ll know I have a problem.”
Drug testing, not drug use, is your problem. You will see your addiction as a political rather than a personal issue. “Not only should it be legalized, but also baked into school lunches.”

-----
Addiction ends the workbook with a challenge: Come up with a plan, then follow through to end the addiction.

Powerful insights from the Enemy himself -- resources and insights to help you be the victor
By Rob Natiuk
The personification of ADDICTION really brings the problem into focus and life. Something like in SCREWTAPE LETTERS by C. S. Lewis, we see the evil intent of "addiction," smooth and devious. He knows how to hook all kinds of people and keep them hooked. To see it from Addiction's viewpoint can really slap a dabbler in drugs and habits that produce drug-like states. The time to digest and share this book is as much as possible before a person gets addicted.

This book is one of a series written by Ken Montrose, a Certified Addictions Counselor with a Master's degree in Developmental Psychology. He has many years of experience in helping people with addictions, including his own.

To know how your enemy operates gives you the weapons to help you be the victor. So Mr. Addiction promises: "I thought I'd tell you exactly how I plan to destroy your life, to see if that would make the game a little more interesting.... Just to be really fair I'll leave space for you to plan how you will defeat me." Mr. Addiction is so confident of his skills and power that he gives you a way out. Yes, first you have to recognize your weakness, and then seek the help and resources to help you recover.

I recommend this book to everyone, but especially to those who are so self-confident and proud that they think they'll never get addicted to anything--drugs, alcohol, prescription drugs, sex, games, internet, etc. That's where a lot of young people fit in. Please -- get this book to them early.

Just okay

A pretty basic book on addictions, could be helpful to some, but not in my case. My husband is an addict and this book was of no value to him or me. Lots of other books have helped more.

How Women Really Think About Men: What the Liberal Media Doesn't Want You to Know, by John Alanis

What Barack Obama and the Liberal Media Do NOT Want You To Know About Dating, Women, and Relationships

Why Would the Liberal Media LIE to You About How Women Really Think?

Yes, it sounds crazy: if you are failing with women, the liberal media is to blame.

Over the past 30 years the portrayal of men has changed dramatically. Gone is the rugged, action oriented individual, replaced by the simpering, submissive fool, begging for the strong Mommy-figure to save him. This covert programming has an insidious effect on men, subtly encouraging dependency while denigrating independence. Liberalism is all about dependency, and the more men dependent on government, the better for the liberal media.

The media portrays dependency as attractive to women, but it’s not in the real world. Behave like the men in the media, and you will have lots of safe female friends, but no girlfriends or lovers. Any relationships will be short lived, ended with, “you’re really sweet, but I just don’t feel that way about you.” What’s worse, there’s no place to learn what really works with women. You keep doing what the media encourages, and you get the same results.

It’s extremely frustrating.

My name is John Alanis, and for 8 years I have taught all kinds of men how to find, attract, and keep the woman you really want. Better yet, I show men how to get women to approach you first for a date, no matter your looks, age or income by knowing how women really think about men, not what they “should think” according to the media bias.

Recently, I had enough of the nonsense spewed by the liberal media, and decided to finally release the truth about how women REALLY think in a low cost dating book any man can afford, regardless of political affiliation.

Who needs this? If you are a man who’d like to get a hot girlfriend, date lots of fun women, find that special one, save a dying relationship, or just get women to like you then this dating book is for you.

Here is what is revealed in this shocking expose:

  • Why the mindset of dependency encouraged by the liberal media actually kills attraction

  • Why women and men do NOT think alike, and why believing this liberal lie ruins your chances of attraction

  • What really turns on the female mind, and why this secret is politically incorrect, even terrifying to the liberal media

  • Why behaving in the manner encouraged by the media repels women, turning them off, causing them to disrespect you

  • How to attract the woman you really want using behavior that actually works in the real world, even you are currently a liberal yourself

…and much, much more. And, you also get access to the bonus audio, “How To Attract Women In An Anti-Male Society” While this audio is OFFENSIVE to liberals, it tells you step by step how to break the hold of media bias and do what really works to attract women.

Break the hold of the liberal media right now: don’t let others determine your results with women. Declare your independence from the liberal media, and take action that will attract the women you really desire. Click the orange buy button right now to invest in this amazing dating book for men, and you too can start choosing the outcomes with women YOU really want.

Oh, and if you don’t own a Kindle, no worries. Amazon will give you free Kindle reader when you click here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=sv_kstore_1?ie=UTF8&docId=1000493771

John, I love you so much, you're a great guy... but I'm NOT in love with you anymore!
By John McGraw
These words hurt worse than some big muscle bound dude breaking each bone in your body with an 16lbs sledge hammer. You do the "right" things, you support her, encourage her, bla, bla, blah and seemingly out of nowhere, the dreaded words of the tittle above slap you in the face while ripping out your heart. What makes it worse is you see in her face that it's true, she did/does love you but what we call romantic love or more appropriately called "Attraction" is gone never to return and all we are left with is broken pieces of our lives and selves while she is happy and "in love" or rather "Attraction" with some other guy that's like I used to be. How messed up, how unfair, somebody ought to do something about this, I deserve more, I am entitled to more, What the &*()?

I'll admit it, I was deep into "woe is me, everyone hates me mentality" after all I wasn't perfect but I was an well meaning, caring guy and thought I just deserved for things to magically work out somehow and be happy ever after. Kind of like rainbows, Unicorns and Hope and Change or some such nonsense but no one nowhere ever taught me about attraction until I stumbled upon an email newsletter opt in page from this cool guy in Austin that had it figured out and was living an life I couldn't really comprehend at the time.

I really wish I'd known of John Alanis years ago, when you read his works there are so many ah-ha moments and light bulbs going off it's quite something. Looking back at my past with Women, John's works act as an filter to view my past failures and triumphs in Attraction and to really understand why things work/ don't work in an easy to understand way.
John, as an businessman really believes in under promising and over delivering and has my respect and I will continue to follow him and his work.

I don't care where you are in life, 18 to 80, single, happy, miserable, in an good or bad relationship the understanding and USE of the Knowledge John teaches will be invaluable to you and to the ones you love so do yourself an favor, buy this under priced book right now, read it, enjoy the free bonus materials and sign up for his free email newsletter and I promise your life will never be the same again.

Skeptical now impressed.
By Alana L. Pratt
"I was skeptical. I'm an Intimacy Expert and I only bought it to see if the author was full of crap. Even though he seems to have a thing for blonds in bikinis (photos are sprinkled throughout the book apparently for your visual cortex's pleasure)... the more I read, the more pleasantly surprised I became that this guy gets what men do wrong that turns women off, regardless of their political affiliation. And while I choose to go far deeper to the heart and soul of the matter, he actually has some solutions I very much agree with. Well worth the read." Allana Pratt

Good and not so good........
By jack hooper
I've become fascinated with the whole area of dating science in the last few years and in that space of time I've absorbed a tonne of information via the various self styled gurus. So a lot of what John Alanis has to say, I've heard before and if you've read any of David de angelo, josh pellicer or carlos xuma's material, theres no need to buy this book. The dating science world is very incestuous, you'll have one guru recommending anothers material and vice versa, all in an attempt to weasel as much money out of vunerable men as possible. Its hard not to be cynical about the whole thing......But having said that there is some good information in this book and it comes at a very cheap price so if you can sort the wheat from the chaff its worth the $3. But like I said, only if you havent already delved into the back catalogue of those mentioned above.
I think John Alanis is right in that somewhere along the line, men need to be instructed in the science of dating as we're pretty clueless in general. Wheresas women seem to have a lot of different resources to tap into from a young age, men dont have anything of the like. We read football magazines when we're kids and health and fitness mags when we get a bit older. Whereas from a very young age girls have a lot of different magazines telling them all about relationships etc
Its not an even playing field and thats not good for men and women. JA makes some very good points about how the liberal media feed men an image of how they think they should be, men absorb this message and end up far removed from who they really are. Which works in hollywood movies but in reality goes down like a lead balloon.
And this is all good stuff. But I think JA shoots himself in the foot in that he repeats himself over and over but also he comes across like he has a chip on his shoulder and this book is more of a venting exercise than a genuine tool created to help other men. Plus theres way too much recommending of other books he's written which damages his credibility even further. Aswell as that he contradicts himself a fair bit. In one section he'll talk about not kow-towing to women(buying gifts, begging for dates, doing things like washing their car)but in another section he'll talk about how in order to keep a woman interested the man has to constantly arrange things to do and in general act like a dancing monkey.
This book has a few good points in it but mostly it comes across like a rant.

Theres a lot of these self styled dating gurus for men out there, but out of all of them I've found Josh pellicer to be the most genuine. Im not affiliated with Josh pellicer in any way but if you're trying to learn about all of this stuff I'd stick with his material and leave the rest to themselves.

Algebraic Geometry and Arithmetic Curves (Oxford Graduate Texts in Mathematics), by Qing Liu

This book is a general introduction to the theory of schemes, followed by applications to arithmetic surfaces and to the theory of reduction of algebraic curves. The first part introduces basic objects such as schemes, morphisms, base change, local properties (normality, regularity, Zariski's Main Theorem). This is followed by the more global aspect: coherent sheaves and a finiteness theorem for their cohomology groups. Then follows a chapter on sheaves of differentials, dualizing sheaves, and grothendieck's duality theory. The first part ends with the theorem of Riemann-Roch and its application to the study of smooth projective curves over a field. Singular curves are treated through a detailed study of the Picard group. The second part starts with blowing-ups and desingularization (embedded or not) of fibered surfaces over a Dedekind ring that leads on to intersection theory on arithmetic surfaces. Castelnuovo's criterion is proved and also the existence of the minimal regular model. This leads to the study of reduction of algebraic curves. The case of elliptic curves is studied in detail. The book concludes with the fundamental theorem of stable reduction of Deligne-Mumford. The book is essentially self-contained, including the necessary material on commutative algebra. The prerequisites are therefore few, and the book should suit a graduate student. It contains many examples and nearly 600 exercises.

Algebraic Geometry and Arithmetic Curves
By CuriousStudent
Good book overall. Some proofs are not clear because it is done in ad hoc ways. Anyway, this is more readable than Hartshorne's book and more stuff is going in this book than Shafarevich's book on scheme. This book only talks about scheme and does not mention old languages at all. Some important topics are not mentioned sufficiently in this book; so it is better to accompany this book with either Hartshorne's or stack project papers.

Also, it does prove most of the commutative algebraic claims in the beginning at least. Eventually the author is forced to just quote the commutative algebraic results, such as CM-rings, excellent rings, etc, but it is not so bad.

This book together with Matsumura on Commutative Algebra and Hartschone on Algebraic Geometry is an excellent book to learn the subject. I am really enjoying it.

Very good exposition
By A Customer
Liu's book has two distinct parts to it. The first 7 chapters combine to give a wonderful exposition of the language of schemes; the other chapters are of a specialised nature and concentrate on arithmetic curves. I will talk about the former. (So when I say "this book", I am only referring to the first 7 chapters)
The book starts off with a chapter on some topics in basic commutative algebra - localisation, flatness and completion. Once this is done, the stage is set to introduce schemes in the next chapter and prove their basic properties. Chapter 3 talks about morphisms of schemes and base change. Chapter 4 continues with a discussion of morphisms and also presents some results about some special types of schemes (normal, regular). It culminates with a proof of Zariski's main theorem. The next chapter takes up sheaf cohomology and is followed up with a chapter on differential calculus on schemes (Kahler differentials, duality theory). Lastly, chapter 7 takes up divisors, proves the Riemann Roch theorem and culminates with some applications to curves.
At a first glance, this would basically look like Hartshorne - the most popular book for an introduction to schemes. However, there are few differences which I will point out. Firstly, Hartshorne emphasizes geometric applications and, as such, uses algebraically closed fields freely. Liu, on the other hand, does not hesistate to give arithmetic applications whenever possible and, therefore, tries to relax the hypotheses on the base field whenever possible. Secondly, Liu is much more readable than Hartshorne which, in its supreme elegance, is a tad dense for a first reading. Unlike Hartshorne, a majority of important results are not presented in the exercises (though many are!). Moreover, unlike Harshorne, this book develops all the necessary commutative algebra along the way (chapter 1,2 of Atiyah-Macdonald should be good enough to read this book). Coming back to the geometry, Hartshorne's chapter 4,5 form an excellent resource for classical geometric applications for theory of schemes. Moreover, chapter 1 presents a very readable and scheme-free account of classical algebraic geometry (pre-Grothendieck) in the language of varieties. Liu's book, however, does not emphasize classical or geometric applications and is not the best place to start if one wishes to learn about varieties.

In the current literature on algebraic geometry, there is a noticeable void. Namely, on one hand, we have Grothendieck's "Elements" (EGA) which present all results about schemes and sheaf cohomology in utmost generality, prove everything with excruciating detail, and are almost unreadable as texts (they're a great references). On the other hand, we have Hartshorne which is basically a beautiful summary of EGA along with geometric applications, but is quite hard to read for an introduction. The book under review is not as concise as Hartshorne's book, presents arithmetic applications and is more readable in a reasonable amount of time than EGA.

In conclusion, this book should be an invaluable resource to anyone who wishes to learn about schemes, especially with arithmetic applications in mind. For those inclined towards geometry, an account of schemes from this book coupled with applications from another book (like Hartshorne) would be a good combination.

The Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb, by Gar Alperovitz

Controversial in nature, this book demonstrates that the United States did not need to use the atomic bomb against Japan. Alperovitz criticizes one of the most hotly debated precursory events to the Cold War, an event that was largely responsible for the evolution of post-World War II American politics and culture.

From Publishers Weekly
Historian Alperovitz argues that America's use of the atomic bomb on Japan was motivated by politics rather than by military necessity.

From Library Journal
The president of the National Center for Economic Alternatives argues that against all advice President Truman was persuaded to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima by incoming Secretary of State James F. Byrnes, who saw the bomb as an important tool for dealing with the Soviets after the war.

From Booklist
Alperovitz is the dean of revisionist scholars who argue that the nuclear bombing of Japan was unnecessary and that America bears a hefty responsibility for the cold war. Since he established his reputation in the mid-1960s, secret documents regarding the run-up to Enola Gay's takeoff have come to light, which Alperovitz believes strengthen his case. His main and probably most controversial contention is that certain documents pertaining to the decision were doctored, some by none other than Truman himself. Further, Alperovitz sees James Byrnes, Truman's Mephistophelian secretary of state, as a furtive player who nixed such alternative plans as modifying the unconditional-surrender demand and encouraging a Russian declaration of war. What about the military leaders, many of whom expressed regrets about the wisdom of the decision, albeit post facto? Alperovitz presents documents that suggest their invasion plans were notional exercises, not realistic probabilities. But his point about their regrets opens the way to his major thesis: deceit by ex-officials, over the decades, has convinced the public that the bombings were justified. Formidably researched, this challenging landmark history may not automatically convert Alperovitz's revisionist views into the new orthodoxy, but they will be referred to for proof or refutation for years to come. An excellent revisionist perspective
By Cameron Reilly
This is incredibly important book reveals some of the behind-the-scenes thought processes that lead to Truman's decisions to use nuclear weapons on Japan. It's replete with supporting evidence, including quotes from the key players in the US, UK, USSR and Japan (taken from their diaries, memoirs, official records, diplomatic communications, intercepted comms, etc), and tries hard to be balanced and cautious with leaping to conclusions. The final assessment is that the opinion of nearly every single senior military and political leader in the US and UK before August 1945 was that Japan was utterly defeated and willing to surrender - especially once the USSR entered the war with them. Why drop the bombs if it wasn't necessary to end the war? It seems to have a lot to do with using the last opportunity to use them in war time (billions had been spent on developing them), and in sending a warning signal to Stalin.

Second-Guessing History
By A Customer
Second-guessing history is always a dicey business, full of "what-ifs" and wild speculation. However, as Alperovitz makes clear, there were several viable options to ending the Pacific War that were both more humane and likely to succeed.
1. Demonstrate the Atom Bomb on an uninhabited atoll, as recommended in the Franck Report by a committee of scientists working on the Project
2. Make a small concession to Japanese pride/saving face and allow the Emperor to retain his throne in a total, but conditional, surrender (which they had already proposed)
3. Allow a few extra days for Japan to react to the entry of the Soviets into the war. It is now known that overtures to a settlement had been relayed to the British Foreign Minister.
Any one of these options would be more likely to succeed than a full-fledged armed invasion of the home islands, which had been proposed as a military disinformation but wasn't being seriously considered. As such, it backfired horribly by strengthening Japanese resolve.
Instead, the hawks and, for lack of a better term, "military-minded" advisors to new president Truman recommended a full use of the weapon. As a result, the United States is still the only nation on earth to have used Atomic weapons in war -- twice -- and against unarmed civilians. Not a very proud legacy.
Their reasoning, with the hindsight of fifty years, now seems sadly small-minded:
1. To justify the expenditure of $2 billion on a weapon originally designed in competition with the now-defeated Germany
2. To intimidate the Soviets into accepting American hegemony.
Experience bore out the Franck Report's prediction that the second goal was unattainable, and its further prediction that a ruinous nuclear arms race would result. The recommendations and predictions of some of the world's smartest people were thrown out by military advisors (specifically James Byrnes, who refused to even share the report with Truman), considering himself better equipped to understand human nature and thus shape history for all of mankind.
Whether "revisionist" or second-guessing, Alperovitz makes a compelling case for better options dismissed, and the tragic legacy of military hubris.

Corto y trascendental!
By dconstanza

Cliente satisfecho.

When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead: Useful Stories from a Persuasive Man, by Jerry Weintraub

Here is the story of Jerry Weintraub: the self-made, Brooklyn-born, Bronx-raised impresario, Hollywood producer, legendary deal maker, and friend of politicians and stars. No matter where nature has placed him--the club rooms of Brooklyn, the Mafia dives of New York's Lower East Side, the wilds of Alaska, or the hills of Hollywood--he has found a way to put on a show and sell tickets at the door. "All life was a theater and I wanted to put it up on a stage," he writes. "I wanted to set the world under a marquee that read: 'Jerry Weintraub Presents.'"

In WHEN I STOP TALKING, YOU'LL KNOW I'M DEAD, we follow Weintraub from his first great success at age twenty-six with Elvis Presley, whom he took on the road; to the immortal days with Sinatra and Rat Pack glory; to his crowning hits as a movie producer, starting with Robert Altman and Nashville, continuing with Oh, God!, The Karate Kid movies, and Diner, among others, and summiting with Steven Soderbergh and Ocean's Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen.

Along the way, we'll watch as Jerry moves from the poker tables of Palm Springs, to the power rooms of Hollywood, to the halls of the White House, to Red Square in Moscow-all the while counseling potentates, poets, and kings, with clients and confidants like George Clooney, Bruce Willis, George H. W. Bush, Armand Hammer, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, John Denver, Bobby Fischer . . .well, the list goes on.

And of course, the story is not yet over . . . As Weintraub says, "When I stop talking, you'll know I'm dead."

From Publishers Weekly
Hollywood power player Weintraub, now 72, is always in control and goes to great lengths to prove it: besides having managed musical legends like Presley, Sinatra and John Denver ("I cooked him from scratch"), Weintraub once closed a deal by faking a heart attack, and won the respect of one of Chicago's most powerful men, Arthur Wirtz, when he cursed Wirtz out for making him wait (Wirtz would go on to become one of Weintraub's mentors). Weintraub's also produced plays, TV shows, movies (from Nashville to the Ocean's 11 franchise), and more, summing up his talent simply: "When I believe in something, it's going to get done." Edgy and honest but refreshingly spare in his criticism of stars, colleagues and family, Weintraub can be forgiven for glossing over speed bumps in his career (one failed business lost $30 million before it closed in the mid-'80s) and occasionally showing his age with wandering rumination. As Weintraub repeatedly states, he is not a star, which perhaps that explains the disappointing omission of photos. Still, with a bold voice, a storied career, and a cast of superstars, his memoir makes a rousing insider tour of some five decades in the entertainment industry.

Review
"Now, I could tell you stories about Jerry, but Jerry is the first and best to tell them. He's funny and grumpy and perfectly inappropriate. When it comes to work, nobody works harder. When it comes to charities, nobody guilts better. And when it comes to friendship, he has no peers. That's Jerry's great talent. He doesn't just light up a room, he lights it on fire. He's a great producer, a great organizer, a great friend, and truly the greatest showman on earth."―George Clooney

"Edgy and honest but refreshingly spare in his criticism of stars, colleagues and family . . . With a bold voice, a storied career, and a cast of superstars, Weintraub's memoir makes a rousing insider tour of some five decades in the entertainment industry."―Publisher's Weekly

"As the title of the book indicates, Weintraub loves to talk. And the 72-year-old impresario has some amazing stories to tell . . . All the stories are told in Weintraub's shooting-the-breeze voice. Credit for the easy-to-read style goes to Rich Cohen, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair magazine who turned Weintraub's tales into a breezy first-person narrative."―Rick Warner, Bloomberg News

"It reads at times like a screenplay: a rags-to-riches tale complete with stunning reversals of fortune, punchy dialogue, and star cameos galore . . . Even the lows are enviable."―Nathaniel Rich, VANITY FAIR

"Jerry has made a fascinating career for himself by finding ways to put on a show and sell tickets at the door. Jerry has bloomed wherever he's been planted. His life has put him in the company of greats like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, The Rat Pack, Robert Altman, and Steven Soderbergh, to name a few. Jerry's story chronicles his journey that involved a lot of improvising, love, and of course, luck. This story isn't just for music or movie lovers, or entrepreneurs....it's for everyone. So, pick up your copy of When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead by Jerry Weintraub... If there was a Mount Rushmore of legendary show business figures, he'd be one of them."―Don Imus

"When I Stop Talking is anything but a rote, let-the-record-show memoir . . . Although it's packed with stories he's surely been telling at dinner forever, the book is also a modest set of guidelines for how you too can be a successful mogul . . . it's written with stealth and style, doubtless shaped by his co-writer, Rich Cohen . . . The book, really, is a performance, a monologue by a guy comfortable hanging with Armand Hammer at Leonid Brezhnev's funeral or with Joey Bishop at a deli. It's a show based on horse pucky on braggadocio."―RJ Smith, LA Times

"This is a guy who can tell a story. And boy does he have stories to tell."―People Magazine

"Weintraub knows a thing or two about placing bets. And his latest venture sounds like a sure thing-an autobiography, pithily titled When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead: Useful Stories from a Persuasive Man . . . [it's] a gripping personal story."―Entertainment Weekly

"Old chestnuts from this journey are lovingly, and often hilariously, burnished in Weintraub's new memoir, When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead . . . The book, which is in no way a scandalous, showbiz tell-all, but a good-humored, and often self-deprecating romp of outrageous will and amazing fortune, also paints a picture of uncanny bliss."―Nicole LaPorte, The Daily Beast

“It reads at times like a screenplay: a rags-to-riches tale complete with stunning reversals of fortune, punchy dialogue, and star cameos galore . . . Even the lows are enviable...In the book’s most entertaining stories he not only has to sell an audience on a celebrity but also has to sell the celebrity on himself . . .’I’ll tell you my biggest talent,’ say Weintraub. ‘When I believe in something, it’s going to get done.’ No reader of his memoir will need to be convinced of that.” (Nathaniel Rich, Vanity Fair )

Great Life, Great Book
By Rob Gordon
Rich Cohen--I've been reading him for ten years--is one of the country's best writers. Jerry Weintraub--film producer, musician manager, deal maker--is one of the nation's best livers. (Mention an event, a celebrity, the man has a story.) Cohen can write anything; Weintraub has done nearly everything. Which is what makes this book such a perfect match. Weintraub is the real deal--came up without money or the helping hands than can do the work of money; produced the three "Ocean's Eleven" pictures, also "Nashville" and "Diner" (two decades' great classics), also managed Elvis, also Sinatra, also the chess-champion Bobby Fischer at Reykjavik. It's an amazing story. Weintraub goes everywhere and does everything; he heads someplace, arrives, finds himself at the center. A gift, which he discovers in himself and develops. He found a way to take Elvis on the road at 26, to bring Sinatra's career back at 35; when he's watching the Fischer chess championship on TV, he just buys a ticket, flies to Iceland, and more or less enters the screen himself. (That's one lesson Weintraub teaches from his kind of life. Find what you love, trust it. Then act.) The story is filled with advice, plus advice-by-example: hustling in the beginning, finding the angle, picking your allies--"If you work with people you love, which, of course, is not always possible, the hard times become an epic adventure"--then getting to a place where your own work functions as an ad, as the attraction: "I did not have to hustle quite as much. Once you've established yourself, you can, to some extent, let business find you. You become a beacon, a door into a better life."

Weintraub's own life swings into the rat pack and Sinatra (first call to Weintraub: "Look, kid, when I say I want to meet that means now"), the White House, Hollywood, Palm Desert: the five great gambling cities (Peking, Moscow, Las Vegas, Washington, Hollywood). Because of his gifts, Weintraub goes everywhere and does everything. His story is a chronicle, a great life, one giant path through the last fifty years. And Cohen, who loves to write lives like this (the corporate big shoulders in "Sweet and Low," the resistance fighters in "The Avengers") helps him tell this story. An incredible mix: Weintraub's friendships, destinations, experiences, lessons, voice, advice; Cohen's speed, words, eye. You feel you're there, which is the first requirement of any writing, and still the hardest one to bring off. You live Weintraub's incredible life alongside him. So the thing reads like a great Saul Bellow novel that also happens to be true--the skinny kid who chucks home, finds the center, makes it big. And there's the great thought that somehow, on some reclining chair with a phone at his ear and some big pending deal and expensive view, Weintraub is living the next chapter. A great mix, a great read. As Sinatra might say, You don't read it; you breathe it.

Typical Hollywood Self-Promotion
By Diego Banducci
Based upon Harvey Levin's description of this as a "Great Book" on TMZ, I bought a copy. Unfortunately, it is not, for the following reasons:

1. The book was ghost-written by Rich Cohn and lacks the immediacy and integrity it would have had if Mr. Weintraub had written it himself;

2. There is an endless parade of all the important people Mr. Weintraub has run into during his life;

3. Mr. Weintraub uncritically fawns all over said important people; and

4. Mr. Weintraub tells us about all of his successes, but none of his failures.

In other words, the reader comes away with the impression that the book is dishonest.

For example, Mr. Weintraub spends a good deal of time eulogizing Elvis Presley's manager, "Colonel" Tom Parker, a bilious bag of gas who took far more than the traditional 10% of Elvis's earnings (reaching 50% by the end of Presley's life). After Elvis's death in 1997, Parker became embroiled in legal claims with Elvis's estate for overreaching, eventually agreeing to sell masters of some of Elvis's major recordings for $2 million and to drop any claims he might have against the estate. It was also later discovered that he was not a U.S. citizen (he was born in the Netherlands) a fact that many believe caused him not to seek concert opportunities for Presley abroad. Even his assumed title of "Colonel" was phony; he was, at best, a "Kentucky Colonel." But Mr. Weintraub discusses none of this in his extensive descriptions of his relationship with Mr. Parker.

There is no question that Mr. Weintraub has the experience to write a great book about the entertainment industry. This is not it.

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "HE DIDN'T ATTEND HARVARD, PRINCETON, STANFORD... HE WENT TO THE SCHOOL OF SINATRA!"
By Rick Shaq Goldstein
Jerry Weintraub was born in 1937 in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx. He was what he and I term a street-wise Jewish New Yorker who wound up as one of Hollywood's true elite impresarios'. Jerry was blessed with two wonderful loving parents... but along with playing stickball and stoopball (which of course... as any New York kid would know included a Spalding!)... Jerry knew he didn't want to go to college... and even though his Dad taught him about the jewelry business he knew he didn't want to become part of his Dad's business. He didn't really know what he wanted but he knew it wasn't that. When he was fourteen-years-old he and a friend ran away from home and with very little money started hitch hiking to Florida. They made it as far as Myrtle Beach before giving up. When he was seventeen-years-old and before he graduated high school he had his parents sign a consent form and he joined the Air Force. He started his training at Keesler Air Force Base (Note: The author mistakenly calls it Kessler Air Force Base. I should know the correct name since I was stationed there approximately sixteen-years after Jerry.) in Biloxi, Mississippi. Jerry discusses the anti-Semitism he encountered there... including circumstances that resulted in him having breakfast with a Klansman. (Note to Jerry: Sixteen years later I ran into the same anti-Semitism and though I didn't have breakfast with a Klansman... I did witness crosses being burned on the lawn of the base... and also was subjected to anti-Semitism by NCOs' very similar to yours.) The author's first person narrative is enticing and near hypnotic as it becomes obvious Jerry has unmatched drive... and a truckload of *CHUTZPAH*... and never hesitated in taking advantage of every opportunity... whether it was offered... or if his inner drive created it himself. After Mississippi Jerry was assigned to Alaska and when he took a part-time job while he was still in the service he came up with the idea of selling complete tropical vacation packages including clothing to freezing locals.

After getting out of the service Jerry's life is a world-wind of mostly self-created opportunity and riches. Just like in a movie... one of his early jobs is in a major talent agencies mailroom. From there in dizzying sequences that you won't be able to keep in chronological order... nor do you need to... he takes Elvis Presley on nationwide concert tours working with one of his marketing idols the legendary Colonel Tom Parker... handles Frank Sinatra... confronts the Mafia... discovers John Denver and molds him into one of the highest paid entertainers in the world... and as they say "SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS"... and he winds up in business with... and lifelong friends with... and advising... everyone from Presidents... to Prime Minister's... to a who's-who of the world's richest men... and marrying one of his early clients Jane Morgan who at that time was one of the most famous entertainer's in the world. He proceeds to not only become one of the top agents in the world... but he becomes a top movie producer... Broadway producer... investor... it's as if a Jewish-street-fighting-silver-tongued- Forrest Gump- with- a -Midas-touch- and- a- gift- for- gab... was literally making up stories of success as he goes... but they're all true.

In the more recent past he produced the "OCEAN'S-ELEVEN-TWELVE-THIRTEEN" trilogy which grossed over ONE-BILLION-DOLLARS... and of course became loving-special-friends with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon... and if that isn't enough he fell in love with a new young girl friend and told his wife of forty-eight-years about it... and she wouldn't divorce him. They discussed it openly with his kids and grandkids and all of them get along fine. As much as any average person would become uncontrollably jealous of a man who has accumulated so much... and who could "name-drop" for thirty days straight and still not repeat a name... it's impossible not to love this guy and root for him. His story telling is absolutely *MESMERIZING*... and when this book ends... your only complaint is that you want more stories!
