Dark Princess (The Oxford W. E. B. Du Bois): A Romance, by W. E. B. Du Bois

W. E. B. Du Bois was a public intellectual, sociologist, and activist on behalf of the African American community. He profoundly shaped black political culture in the United States through his founding role in the NAACP, as well as internationally through the Pan-African movement. Du Bois's sociological and historical research on African-American communities and culture broke ground in many areas, including the history of the post-Civil War Reconstruction period. Du Bois was also a prolific author of novels, autobiographical accounts, innumerable editorials and journalistic pieces, and several works of history.

The Dark Princess is a story of magical love and radical politics, a romance facing obstacles in a white-dominated world. Du Bois's allegorical tale follows Mathew Townes from his political disillusionment to his association with a powerful and seductive revolutionary leader, Kautilya, the princess of the Tibetan Kingdom of Bwodpur. With Dark Princess, Du Bois explores the color line from a fantastical angle while inserting his signature sociological style. With a series introduction by editor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and an introduction by Homi Bhahba, this edition is essential for anyone interested in African American history.

From the Inside Flap
The remarkably complex romance in which Du Bois confronted the twentieth century world that had closed itself to people of color

From the Back Cover
The problem of "the color line", W. E. B. Du Bois's ever-present polemical theme, is at the core of this novel of sensual love, radical politics, and the quest for racial justice. Originally published in 1928, Dark Princess has a fantastical storyline, heavy with propagandist overtones. Du Bois depicts 1920s America as a racist nation primed for radical protest and terrorism. Matthew Townes, the protagonist, is a medical student expelled because his race bars him from the required course in obstetrics in a white hospital. Self-exiled in Berlin after his political idealism is corrupted, Townes falls in love with Princess Kautilya, daughter of a maharajah, and joins her international team in which people of color unite against white imperialism.

Dubois: Dark Princess
By Kaneasha Shackelford
With the emergence of what has come to be known as modernity, no one writing of Du Bois, especially his earlier writings, can claim his mastery of economic, religious and political disciplines, making him incomparable to any scholar as it relates to understanding black religion and its messianic calling. His approach to Dark Princess is an extreme example: it interweaves social thought, black and Indian political theory, capitalist hybridization, biblical theology, post slavery studies and a pastiche of Eastern religion. Arnold Rampersand provides a similar acknowledgement of the interdisciplinary work of Dark Princess citing it as a "queer combination of outright propaganda and Arabian tale, of social realism, and quaint romance." Published in 1928, Du Bois, in his self proclaimed most favorite literary work, Dark Princess, unfolds the impact of the protracted violence of Euro-American modernity upon Pan Asian and Pan African people.

According to Bill Mullen, throughout his extensive career, W.E.B. Du Bois' stance for Asian nationalism is often overlooked and undervalued, even though it is essential to understanding his philosophy of politics, economy and religion. In 1904, Du Bois advocated Asia's war with Russia and completed a second trip to China in 1959. Mullen states, in his article entitled Afro-Asia Internationalism, Asia was for Du Bois, "a literal and figurative site of his intellectual evolution from "Fabian socialist" to "revolutionary Marxist." Because of his affiliations with Japan, India and China, Pan-Asian affairs merged into his work as a black intellectual and his vision of unification between dark bodies affected by the U.S. "color line" and dark bodies internationally affected by the international "color line. " For Du Bois, Asian and African peoples both were fighting to get out of the international strongholds of European colonialism.

Du Bois use of Kautilya's name has historical and political implications that are severe. In Roger Boesche's article, "Kautilya's Arthasastra on War and Diplomacy in Ancient India," he notes that, Kautilya was the key adviser to the Indian king Chandragupta Maurya (c. 317-293 B.C.E.), which strikingly is one of the names given to Matthew's and Kautilya's son in the conclusion of Dark Princess. Chandragupta was the first king to unite the Indian subcontinent in empire. Around 300 BCE, Kautilya wrote the Arthasastra which was a "science of politics intended to teach a wise king how to govern ." Boesche notes, "Kautilya offers wide-ranging and truly fascinating discussions on war and diplomacy, including his wish to have his king become a world conqueror." Moreover, Kautilya's Artharshatra gives an "analysis of which kingdoms are natural allies and which are inevitable enemies, his willingness to make treaties he knew he would break, his doctrine of silent war or a war of assassination against an unsuspecting king, his approval of secret agents who killed enemy leaders and sowed discord among them."
Throughout Dark Princess, we see Du Bois employ several of these political moves through Princess Kautilya, her entourage and allies, and especially in the character of Perigua. However, interestingly enough there is something that Princess Kautilya, an eastern representative of political and religious ideals, needs in order to fulfill her destiny against European colonialism. For Du Bois, it is imperative that Princess Kautilya understands the black American experience and most importantly the messianic calling of blacks and black Christianity. Du Bois, through Princess Kautilya, an Eastern figure, captures perhaps the inadequacy of her Eastern political power as it relates to overcoming oppression, in comparison to a group of Western dark people, blacks in America, who follow Christ. Again, for Du Bois, Asian and African peoples both were fighting to get out of the international strongholds of European colonialism. And we know Christianity's ties to colonialism, and moreover, the connection between colonialism and racism. Thus, Du Bois' debates are also undergirded and shaped against the religious thought of European Christianity, and its theological error upon Africa, Asia and America. It almost poses the question, what powerful influence, for Du Bois, does black Christianity have on political systems of the world?

Terrific Hands-On Learning
By LindaB
I’ve seen students study simple machines in the past, from the youngest to the oldest at my school (K-8), and to support them, I’ve scrambled to find many resources that would help them in a discovery process. There needed to be some explanation, a gathering of materials, and then the fun work of experimenting, trying all sorts of ways to try to learn how each kind of machine works. We did do it, but how I wish I had had this wonderful book by Kelly Doudna to help the students learn!
Kelly introduces the six simple machines with good basic examples in words and pictures first. For example, a young girl pours her breakfast cereal from a container; it’s an inclined plane. And that, along with the other machines’ examples, shows what they REALLY DO. Each one, when used, gives a mechanical advantage, an important first vocabulary term. The introduction also introduces Archimedes, and like a few other background pages throughout the exercises, it shows a picture, the time period in which he lived, some of what he studied, and a famous quote. Early in the book there is also a visual list of all the common household items needed in order to do the experiments. It will be helpful to those preparing to experiment.
Each machine is thoroughly introduced, and includes what is termed a “Spotlight” (the first picture) which is a real-life example of one of the machines. For example, an airplane’s propeller is shown and defined as a screw, which is an inclined plane wrapped around a core. And the ferris wheel (picture above) is introduced in the section about the wheel and axle. Each “Spotlight” offers history along with pictured explanations of the example. My favorite explains the pinball machine! The book is filled with clearly explained information and lots of pictures, along with many application activities. It has a few pictures at the back in order to see if you can identify the simple machines in use, and a brief historical piece about Rube Goldberg.
I imagine that not only should a school’s library have one of these books, each classroom will benefit from this terrific resource. It's a book both entertaining and educational!

Fun and educational
By Vera
I remember when my children were in school they learned about simple machines in school during science lessons. It would have been absolutely fantastic to have had The Kids’ Book of Simple Machines available for them to thoroughly explore the basics of machine concepts.

In this super little book, the six basic machines are introduced in understandable terms and then spotlights are on the history of their discovery and use as well. The six are: lever, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, wheel and axle, and screw. Included are activities using simple, everyday items to make these or use them to create engineering marvels of their very own.
description

I like that the author brings a bit of history lesson into the mix as well - introducing Archimedes, Galileo, and on to the Wright brothers and Rube Goldberg. I like that there is a separate chapter for each “machine” after the initial introductory chapter. Again, the author has placed a spotlight in each chapter that captures the reader’s attention with history or more detail. Wonderful! Then at the back, finding or identifying machines in everyday things. And then the wonderful concept of true engineering – putting together several “machines” to create one.

And like all good educational books, there is a glossary of words and terms that might need a bit of defining. Then for hunting and finding a bit of special information, there is an index at the back and a table of contents in the front. Truly a book that will prove entertaining (for boys and girls alike), educational (for kids of all ages – yep, Mom & Dad will enjoy discovering with the kids), and enjoyable.

I was excited about this book that I ordered for my 9-year-old grandson, and I was not disappointed. It has lots of examples and simple experiments to help kids learn to recognize the simple machines we use all the time and how to use the concepts to make work easier and safer. I wish I'd had a book like this when I was a kid.

Wheel of Stars, by Andrew Gabriel Roth

The Bible is the world's best selling book of all time, and yet, some of the greatest mysteries have remained un-deciphered...until now. This is not speculation-the Wheel of Stars is real-the mathematics within this publication have been verified with scientific precision. Roth will show you, in graphic detail, how this "lost" information has been in the Word of YHWH all along, passed down from Enoch to Moses to David, to Ezra and up to the time of Messiah. Scripture tells us that hidden knowledge would be revealed, our computer age has confirmed something magnificent. If you thought "Torah Codes Research" was amazing, you haven't seen anything yet! Join Roth on an adventure that deciphers clues scattered across the world and forgotten for millennia, only to re-emerge with one of the greatest life-affirming messages Scripture can give us about ourselves, our role in the Cosmos and the ultimate fulfillment of all our hopes! This is something that no work of fiction could match because this is real, it is true, what has happened in history is happening now! Wheel of Stars shows how the sun, moon and stars set dates in ancient times and how and why information about the calendar was suppressed by the priesthood. Roth employs an eclectic approach that brings astronomy and the prophetic calendar to a whole new level.

Scholarly, could be fascinating but so dry & technical.
By Trish
I often like technical writings because they are providing concrete evidence rather than just speculations. However, I find myself wishing someone would rewrite this book and make the plethora of technicalities more reader friendly.

The reason I bought this book is because I heard Roth on God's Learning Channel & was somewhat amazed to learn that he says astronomical calculations make 2030 Resurrection Day to be "highly significant." (He demures from saying just how significant but I think one can read between the lines.)

Before I ever heard of this book, I read conflicting research on when Yeshua, aka Jesus, was crucified but had decided it was probably in 30 A.D., and Roth agrees with that year.

I noticed 30 A.D. would give 40 years before the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D., 40 being a highly significant number in Scriptures. It also made sense to me, personally, that the time of the Resurrection would be a turning point in caclulating Biblical historical time. I assumed Yeshua was resurrected at the start of the 4000 year period in history, the 4th "day", and that 2000 years later would bring the completion of 6000 years, the very last "day." ("A thousand years is as a day...") Those calculatins bring us to 2030 Resurrection Day.

MHOs.

Again, Roth seemed to be providing scientific astronomical backup for my own informal calculations, so I'm very intrigued. But the book is just too dry & unrelentingly technical for me, personally, to work through. (Maybe some day.)

I give it 3 stars not 5 for that reason.

However if you are more patient than I am, and especially if you are into astronomy, you could find it quite fascinating. Maybe it would help, though, to go to Roth's website & see the GLC interview first?

[Edit just in case someone might be interested...
I now believe Messiah was crucified on April 3, 33 A.D. This is based on fairly recent studies of earthquake evidences in that area, plus analysis of the Bible and Jewish history of the time. It would seem that Messiah was baptized "to fulfill all righteousness" at the age of 30. This would bring the time of the destruction of the Temple to 40 years later if counting from when His Ministry, apparently, began. Mho the first 4000 years of 6000 would end at Passover, or at the Resurrection, or at the Ascension. Mho again, I think it would be at the Ascension. I am not pre trib but pre wrath, but there still is a rapture and it seems to me you could say Yahushua was raptured 40 days after Passover, thus truly ending His Ministry on earth while in the flesh. Just giving my speculations for whatever food for thought they might provide.]

Wheel of Stars by Andrew Gabriel Roth
By Dennis Abdalla
+This book is unique. It relates information on the Scriptures and on Astronomy, discribing the calendar of Yahweh (God) and how it will be used in the future Kingdom. Parts of it is difficult reading. You must study it! If you are interested in Scripture and the stars I highly recommend it.

You will never look at the stars the same again
By PlainAcres
This book is well written. It has enough meat in it to keep the attention of Biblical Scholars, but it is written in plain English so the rest of us can understand it.

Now I look in amazement at the stars and realize that they are Yah's prophetic time piece.

This book points out the origins of and explains the types of calendars used by the Ancients. Roth clearly describes the original calendar system. This becomes an important tool in understanding both Bible prophecy as well as Biblical history.

Philip K. Dick: not just "Blade Runner," a deeply thoughtful author ahead of his time.
By Barton Brown
Probably best known as the author of "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" (which is in this collection), one storyline of which was made into Ridley Scott's iconic "Blade Runner," P.K. Dick is one of the great American dystopian writers of all time. His long novelette (also in this collection), "The Man in the High Castle" (Hugo Award winner, 1963) is an alternate-past story that posits a post WWII America in which the Germans and Japanese have won the war, and divided the United States between them -- the Nazis ruling the East from the Atlantic to the Eastern Great Plains, and the Japanese annexing all of the US from the Pacific Coast nearly to the Rockies, the great space between their empires a sort of ungoverned -- and ungovernable -- no-man's-land of malcontents, criminals, spies, and survivalists. The overarching plot is that the Nazis, not content with half of America, want to destroy the Japanese Empire, considering Asians an inferior race, like the Jews, Slavs, Poles, and Gypsies. A touchstone for Dick in writing " "The Man in the High Castle" was Ward Moore's 1953 "Bring The Jubilee," another alternate-reality novel in which the South has won the Civil War.

This is a Must-Own
By Chauncey
This volume contains the heavy-hitters like Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, and Ubik. Like all Library of America books, the proportions and build quality are impeccable. Regarding the content of this collection: I have found a new favorite author. Without question one of the best existential books on what it means to live. The stories takes a little while to get up and moving, but once they get into gear the themes they discuss come alive in well-articulated prose that encourages introspection and contemplation. This book is moving, thoughtful, and as philosophical as the reader chooses. Certainly a recommended purchase.

OMG ! Rachel Murders Goats!
By Phillip
After watching Blade Runner for the bazillionth time last week I decided finally to read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? I bought the LOA volume because I love the quality of the binding and printing of their publications.................I am not a fan of SF literature at all and cannot compare Dick to any of his peers...when I read genre fiction I read American crime fiction with the Killer Inside Me and POP 1280 by Jim Thompson as the apex of that style.

This book literally blew my mind..............it is so different from the screenplay adapted from it..........it is funnier, more horrifying, and much more thought provoking than Blade Runner............the earth is certainly a nastier and dirtier place than the earth in the movie. The scene where Deckard buys a goat on impulse is one the funniest things I have ever read. The scene where Pris tortures a small spider is one of the most sickening things I have ever read. The scene where the talented opera singing replicant is retired is one the saddest things I have read. A woman or andy who can sing Mozart roles like Donna Anna and Pamina is a source of beauty in an ugly world............her death is much more a downer than the retirement of the snake woman in the movie.

I can certainly see why they could not film the book as written..............animal abusers do not go over well in Peoria ....... however, the book is a must read. I am sorry I just got around to it.

Tale of a Warrior Artist's Reawakening...
By Gina
What a wonderful find! I've been searching for a book such as this for quite some time. I am a self-taught artist since grade school, but life and other such things happened and I walked away from painting. Enter Bruce Lee...he came to me in a lucid dream where as soon as I saw him, I feigned a karate chop at him. He silently shook his head 'no' while smiling, took me by the hand and led me back to a table full of paints, brushes and a half finished painting. Could his message have been, "Don't fight it, go back to painting." ??? So, my internet search for acrylic abstract instruction led me to Jo Toye's book, Abstract Explorations. Oh my...it is exactly the instruction I've been looking for. And I can tell it's blooming my inner artist once again because her very first, simple task is to mix violet with acrylic glaze medium and play with that a bit. And did I play! I played for longer than I ought to and was late for work! I couldn't stop playing. Being a writer, I thought that was how I emoted, but being on the verge of a traumatic breakup, I unleashed much of what I'd been holding inside me as 'therapeutic painting'. Oh, the feeling was cathartic and wonderful. So, if you're like me and have a gazillion art instruction books on your shelves that are dusty and sadly unused, buy Jo Toye's book and allow it to unleash your fiery, inner Artist Warrior too !

A "Must Have" book on Abstract Art Techniques and Tools!
By Peggy J. Steffens
I am an abstract artist and I HIGHLY recommend Abstract Explorations in Acrylic Painting. I have purchased hundreds of art books and this book is one of the best I have ever purchased because it provides detailed step-by-step directions that you can follow. In a recent exercise I followed there were 19 steps in the process and at the end I felt like I had been in a class learning the process. In many art books, I try to follow the steps and often wonder how the artist went from step 4 to 5 as many things seem to be missing. In this book, there are complete details. In addition, she uses innovative techniques like painting with a razor and provides tips for being successful, avoiding making a mess and a variety of different techniques to try. You will find creative ways to make glue gun stencils, use make-up sponges, paint with pipettes, masking fluid, atomizers and tar gel. I learned to use glazing medium with gesso which was a new technique for me that I will use in the future. The book is written with humor in an easy to understand manner. Jo's book has amazing paintings and tutorials that have inspired me and pushed my creative envelope. This is a must have book for all abstract artists or anyone interesting in trying their hand at abstract art. I have attached a picture of an exercise I created following the techniques in the book.

Great book. I got my copy of this book ...
By Carol Lagrow
Great book. I got my copy of this book Thursday and I have read it and re-read it. And, I am starting to try out the ideas/techniques. It is well written, very good photos and descriptions. Great ideas. I am a watercolor artist and was not sure about doing abstracts and acrylic. BUT, I will definitely add this to my artwork. The cover says "fun, creative and innovative techniques" and that is a good description. There are a lot of ideas and techniques shown and step by step demos. Also, it is not overdone in descriptions as there are a lot of photos to go along with each of the techniques. So many art books go on and on without photos, or have photos but no descriptions. This book has a perfect combination of written description and photos. We are visual people and this does it perfectly.
Very very well done. I give a full 5 stars and highly recommend buying it.

Supply Chain Risk Management: Tools for Analysis (The Supply and Operations Management Collection), by David Olson

One of the many outcomes resulting from the explosion of international trade is access to lower cost production opportunities through outsourcing. This phenomenon has increased the importance of supply chains, the information technology needed to coordinate them and the need for this relatively complex enterprise to be exceptionally well-managed. There are obviously many cost benefits to be had from maintaining a strong and far-reaching supply chain. However, this opportunity to lower costs entails significant risks, such as tsunamis, earthquakes, political unrest, and economic turbulence. This book will introduce concepts and examples of risk in supply chain management, followed by an identification and discussion of an array of quantitative tools (selection methods, risk simulation modeling, and business scorecard analysis) to help manage these risks. Many books are appearing that address various aspects of supply chain risks. No other book known to the author addresses this set of modeling tools as a means of managing this risk.

A good introduction to risk in a supply chain
By PhilEll72
This is a good introduction to risk analysis in a supply chain. I thought the author spent too much time exploring subjects around the risk analysis, but I see how the topics are linked and it would be hard to give a good definition of risks without exploring mitigation topics as well. This is a good book and well worth the time spent reading it as part of developing your risk analysis.

One Nation Under God: How Corporate America Invented Christian America, by Kevin M. Kruse

We're often told that the United States is, was, and always has been a Christian nation. But in One Nation Under God, historian Kevin M. Kruse reveals that the idea of “Christian America” is an invention—and a relatively recent one at that.

As Kruse argues, the belief that America is fundamentally and formally a Christian nation originated in the 1930s when businessmen enlisted religious activists in their fight against FDR's New Deal. Corporations from General Motors to Hilton Hotels bankrolled conservative clergymen, encouraging them to attack the New Deal as a program of “pagan statism” that perverted the central principle of Christianity: the sanctity and salvation of the individual. Their campaign for “freedom under God” culminated in the election of their close ally Dwight Eisenhower in 1952.

But this apparent triumph had an ironic twist. In Eisenhower's hands, a religious movement born in opposition to the government was transformed into one that fused faith and the federal government as never before. During the 1950s, Eisenhower revolutionized the role of religion in American political culture, inventing new traditions from inaugural prayers to the National Prayer Breakfast. Meanwhile, Congress added the phrase “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance and made “In God We Trust” the country's first official motto. With private groups joining in, church membership soared to an all-time high of 69%. For the first time, Americans began to think of their country as an officially Christian nation.

During this moment, virtually all Americans—across the religious and political spectrum—believed that their country was “one nation under God.” But as Americans moved from broad generalities to the details of issues such as school prayer, cracks began to appear. Religious leaders rejected this “lowest common denomination” public religion, leaving conservative political activists to champion it alone. In Richard Nixon's hands, a politics that conflated piety and patriotism became sole property of the right.

Provocative and authoritative, One Nation Under God reveals how the unholy alliance of money, religion, and politics created a false origin story that continues to define and divide American politics to this day.

Review
Shelf Awareness for Readers
“A detailed history of the roots of the campaign arguing that the United States is a Christian nation.”

Commonweal
“A lucid narrative...”

Bookforum
“[An] engaging history of modern religious nationalism ... briskly narrated and richly detailed...”

Library Journal, Editors' Spring Picks
“Kruse addresses how corporations used clergymen in their PR war against Roosevelt's New Deal and how evangelist Billy Graham helped Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon use religion as the ‘lowest-common denominator' to unite the public. I've yet to finish it, but I can already tell this will be an informative, insightful read.”

Kirkus, starred review
“In a book for readers from both parties, Kruse ably demonstrates how the simple ornamental mottoes ‘under God' and ‘In God We Trust,' as well as the fight to define America as Christian, were parts of a clever business plan.”

New York Times Book Review
“Kruse tells a big and important story about the mingling of religiosity and politics since the 1930s.”

Wall Street Journal
“America was founded in 1776, but it was only in 1953, with the inauguration of Dwight David Eisenhower as the 34th president, that it became a Christian nation. Such is Kevin M. Kruse's thesis and, after reading One Nation Under God, it makes perfect sense… an important and convincing reminder that the roots of Christian America were cultivated well before the era of the religious right.”

Washington Post
"Fascinating."

The Nation
“An illuminating addition to the growing field of the history of American conservatism and capitalism, as well as a vibrant study of the way cultural influence works—one that will make it impossible to take for granted the small print on the back of a dollar bill ever again.... This is what's most interesting in the story Kruse is telling: the pattern of continuity and change that links our own time with those that came before.”

Foreign Affairs
“[A] fine new book.... Kruse's thoughtful book illustrates a kind of life cycle of American religious politics: fervent social movements rise up, crest with presidential support, and then slip away, leaving behind rituals, rhetoric, rules, and reforms.”

Ari Kelman, author of the Bancroft Prize-winning A Misplaced Massacre
“In this brilliant and iconoclastic book, Kevin M. Kruse shows how an unholy alliance of greedy businessmen, venal clergy, and conservative politicians exploited American spirituality for partisan gain. Kruse's research is extraordinary, his prose vivid, his argument profound. One Nation Under God is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding contemporary culture in the United States.”

Lizabeth Cohen, author of Making a New Deal: Industrial Workers in America, 1919-1939
“Prepare yourself for a startling and important discovery: ‘Christian America' is not a legacy of the nation's founders or a construct of the Cold War Era. Rather, as Kevin Kruse so powerfully shows, it was the deliberate invention of conservative corporate leaders who allied with like-minded clergymen in the 1930s to fight the antichrist they most feared: Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. Kruse convincingly argues that the rise of the religious right over the next decades grew out of these anti-liberal politics, not the other way around. ‘Church and state' in America has rarely had a better historian than Kruse.”

H-Net, H-AmRel
“Both contributes decisively to an ongoing scholarly conversation and introduces its readers to a plethora of little-known documents, archives, organizations, and individuals.... A significant contribution to the history of the Christian Right, the Cold war, and the culture wars of the recent past…”

Religion in American History
“An eminently readable book, chock-full of lively and entertaining anecdotes.”

Patheos
“Engagingly traces the rise of the Christian Right as a political force in America.... One Nation Under God is an important book. We — Christians and Americans — need to understand our history.... In One Nation Under God Kruse offers us a potent reminder of where we have come from, and, perhaps more importantly, how far we still have to go.”

Sojourners
“A thorough and fascinating treatment of a little known thread of U.S. history.”

National Memo
“A new, meticulous, and vital historical account that should be read by anyone who still scratches their head over whether the Tea Party is a religious movement, or wonders how the idealized conception of America as a ‘Christian nation' was constructed.... Essential reading for anyone who wants to understand that uniquely American alliance between God and mammon.”

Jon Butler, Professor Emeritus of American Studies, History, and Religious Studies at Yale University
“Kevin M. Kruse's startling One Nation Under God reveals the extraordinary Cold War politics that put 'under God' in America's Pledge of Allegiance, 'In God We Trust' on U.S. stamps, and Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments on Hollywood's biggest movie list. The political warriors for a 'Christian America' made the Puritans look like pikers, and Kruse dissects their successes and foibles with grace, glowing research, and more than a little humor. A compelling read!”

Andrew Preston, author of Sword of the Spirit, Shield of Faith: Religion in American War and Diplomacy
“In this riveting book, Kevin Kruse combines the history of religion with the history of capitalism to craft an original interpretation about America's religious identity. Revisionist in the best sense—bold, daring, and intelligent—it will change how we think about the American past.”

Dallas Morning News
“Illuminating ... a useful corrective to preacher-politicians who endlessly call for a return to the nation's religious roots. As Kruse skillfully demonstrates, some of those roots took hold only yesterday.”

The New Republic
“A deftly detailed history of Christianity's service to capitalism in the United States.”

Christianity Today
“An engaging and important book...”

The American Prospect
“Fascinating, vividly drawn portraits of many players in this drama.”

America
“A fresh and revealing re-examination of the oft-studied career of the phrase ‘under God'.... A deft elaboration on the irony of the corporate involvement in the Christian America promotion ... [a] literary portrait taken during the last decades in which Protestant powers ‘ran the show.'”

Humanist
“The author lays out a new mega-subdivision in our sprawling religious history. The result exposes a class of pulpit vipers who infect an insecure quarter of the population and who can never shake the feeling they are not as believed in as they believe they should be.”

Library Journal, starred review
“Thorough and thought-provoking scholarship.... Kruse reveals the marketing machine behind American godliness with authority, insight, and clarity. He illustrates key turning points along the way to provide a cohesive picture of a well-powered movement. He hands us the agenda behind the Pledge of Allegiance, ‘in God we trust,' and other cornerstones of American patriotism. In short, he exposes the PR man behind the pious curtain.”

E.J. Dionne, Jr., author of Souled Out: Reclaiming Faith and Politics after the Religious Right
“Much has been written about the religious right, but Kevin Kruse has written a breakthrough book by describing the movement's pre-history in the 1930s and 1950s—and in fascinating detail. Engagingly written, One Nation Under God will provoke many arguments, but it will require all sides to come to terms with facts and events largely buried in our collective memory until Kruse bravely set out to challenge our assumptions.”

How Corporate America created free-enterprise Jesus to undo the New Deal
By Alice Friedemann
This book tells the history of how corporate America have tried to undo New Deal reforms since the 1940s by creating a new free-enterprise religion, and to erode the separation of church and state.

Corporate America’s creation of a free-enterprise selfish Jesus began in 1935 with the founding of an organization called Spiritual Mobilization. Some of the corporations who donated money to this and similar organizations include: American Cyanamid and chemical corporation, Associated Refineries, AT&T, Bechtel Corporation, Caterpillar Tractor Company, Chevrolet, Chicago & Southern Airline, Chrysler corporation, Colgate-Palmolive Company, Deering-Milliken, Detroit Edison, Disney, DuPont, Eastern Airlines, General Electric, General Foods, General Motors, Goodwill, Goodyear Tire & Rubber, IBM, J. C. Penney, J. Walter Thompson, Mark A. Hanna, Marriott, Marshall Field, Monsanto Chemical Company, National Association of Manufacturers, Pacific Mutual Life Insurance, Paramount Pictures, PepsiCo, Precision Valve Corp, Quaker Oats, Republic Steel Corp, Richfield Oil Co., San Diego Gas & Electric, Schick Safety Razor, Standard Oil Company, Sun Oil company, Sun shipbuilding company, Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation, United Airlines, US Rubber company, US steel corporation, Utah Power & Light, Warner Bros. Pictures, Weyerhauser.

In the 1930s, corporations were well known to have brought on the Great Depression with their tremendous greed and dishonesty. The New Deal reformed the financial system, distributed wealth more evenly, provided a social safety net, protected the people by regulating businesses to protect them from unsafe and unhealthy food, drugs, and other products, toxic pollution, aided farmers in slowing soil erosion to prevent more dust bowls (and feed Americans for hundreds of years-- good topsoil is America’s most important treasure), and other public services that benefited everyone.

The New Deal embodied the ideals of the Social Gospel, a movement dedicated to the public good, economic equality, eradication of poverty, slums, child labor, an unclean environment, inadequate labor unions, poor schools, and war (Wiki Social Gospel).

Corporate America fought against these reforms and has been trying to undo the New Deal ever since then.

One of their most successful tactics was getting religious leaders to spout a new version of Jesus – a free-enterprise, Ayn Rand, selfish Jesus and eradicate the Social Gospel Jesus of the New Deal.

At first ministers and people saw through since this propaganda was obviously craven corporate self-interest.

So the propaganda was crafted more subtly, and sold to conservative religious leaders. Congregations then listened to sermons about the free-enterprise Jesus with open hearts and minds, which they would have laughed at if the speaker were a CEO. The new religion taught them to hate unions, social welfare, to fear and hate government, to be against abortion and birth control (mainly because the more people there are, the less industries have to pay them). It was broadcast from conservative religious radio and TV stations, and in the secular world.

This is why you don’t have a chance of talking Uncle Bob out of voting for demagogues at the Thanksgiving table – you’re attacking his religion and core beliefs he’s heard since his first sermon, and his brain shuts down in anger. He’s been taught since he was a baby that he should hate and fear government, not corporations.

People like to say that capitalism is imperfect, but the best system that exists. Well, it’s great at raping, pillaging, and poisoning land, water, and air than any other system. Industrial farming is depleting aquifers and eroding and compacting top soil to the point where it won’t produce much food after centuries rather than millennia. Global conventional oil production, where 90% of our oil comes from, peaked in 2005 (Aleklett et al. 2012; Kerr 2011; Murray 2012; Newby 2011; IEA 2010; Zittel et al. 2013), declining at a rate of 6% now and increasing to 9% by 2030 (Hook 2009). According to the Department of Energy, you’d want to prepare at least 20 years ahead of time for peak oil (Hirsch 2005), yet here we are 12 years after peak conventional oil, with both Democrats and Republicans assuming that endless growth on a finite planet will fix things. We don’t have endless energy, it turns out that earth is not a giant gas tank, and even if it were, exponential growth would drain it in centuries.

There isn’t a single endeavor that doesn’t depend on energy, especially supply chains, mining, logging, construction, and road building, which are done with heavy-duty trucks, which can only accomplish their work with diesel engines that burn only diesel (Friedemann 2015).

Since the social net is funded by an ever-expanding working population and growth, social security and Medicare are Ponzi schemes, as well as our financial system, which depends on growth to pay back debt. The corporations are about to get the death of the New Deal they’ve so wanted via the decline of our fossil-fueled civilization.

There is no political party that can fix this, so it’s time to strengthen your community to become more resilient, self-sufficient, and able to supply food and other essentials locally. To fix water and sewage infrastructure. It’s time to embrace the social gospel and help community members less fortunate than you in the years ahead.

Why is America so Christian
By Dave_the_Reader
Kruse tackles the question of why America is so Christian while most industrialized countries have remained or gone secular. Historian Kruse presents sound evidence that the shift started during the Great Depression, funded by a few wealthy individuals. The conventional wisdom was that it was a response to the godless Soviets during the Cold War. Basically, money from a few wealthy individuals funded a nascent movement. WW II kept it going. It exploded during the Cold War. I haven't found any faults with his argument. The time from about 1934 to around the 1960's are covered best, with only light coverage after that.

Well-written history of Christianity and American public life
By cday2342
Terrific book. Deep, analytical history that explores how religion became central in American public life. As a Christian one of the things that bothers me about that centrality is the consumerist nature of it, and understanding the extent of its roots in corporate campaigns to blend capitalism and Christianity. This offers a fair, thorough look at how that developed, and anyone dismissing it as anti-Christian or even anti-public religion is doing themselves a disservice. If nothing else, understanding the origins of "One Nation Under God" as a phrase and how its meaning developed is worthwhile.
