Frankly, I dislike terms such as “bad” and “failure” when discussing efforts to improve. They tend to be self-defeating. That said, here’s the basic premise of this book: To improve at being or doing whatever, it is necessary to be “bad” during the process of becoming better.

As Erika Andersen explains, “we have to learn to be okay with being continuously uncomfortable in a way that no one in a previous generation has had to do…we have to learn to be ‘comfortable with being uncomfortable”…What I’ll be doing with you here is supporting you in building a few key habits of mind and action — mental skills that will allow you to acquire new capabilities quickly and continuously. This is an essential ability in our world.” I agree.

Time Out. I cannot recall a prior time in my life when a larger percentage of the people I know had more “crutches” than they do now. Self-justifications fill the air like arrows at Agincourt. So many people refuse to take ownership of the consequences of decisions they made. Personal accountability is as rare as a unicorn. Improvement in some areas requires more time and attention than it does in other areas. Becoming a much better listener, for example, or earning an introverted colleague’s trust. Keep in mind this sound advice from ancient Rome: festina lente. When appropriate, “make haste slowly.” The point is, getting better is — or at least should be — a never-ending process, not an ultimate destination. As for “staying ready for the future,” Peter Drucker insists that much of it is already here and William Gibson agrees, adding that “it’s just not evenly distributed.” Whatever awaits, it seems prudent to prepare for the most likely contingencies.

Andersen is a world-class expert on personal growth and personal development. The information, insights, and counsel she provides in this volume has been gained from hundreds (if not thousands) of her personal as well as professional relationships. With all due respect to the potential value of the material in the book, however, it is essentially worthless unless and until readers apply it effectively in their lives. So I urge each of those who read my brief commentary to embrace this opportunity to embark with Andersen on a journey of personal discovery. Establish with her help the routines and habits on which success (however defined) depends. I presume to add that a best effort — obviously — offers no guarantee of achieving success. That said…

Here’s what Helen Keller suggests: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” I say go for it. With Erika Andersen, you will have splendid company.

You're never too old to learn new things.

At age 78, I am not in the work force but there are still plenty of things I need to learn in order to keep up and function in today's world. I resist the computer world but here I am, writing a review on Amazon. Anderson's use of Michaelangelo as an exemplar of her method was perfect. It made each step more understandable and much more interesting. The author's voice was friendly, understanding and encouraging. I loved her descriptions of her own "being bad." The whole experience has given me the courage to try the things I've been putting off.

The Real Thing

A consistent theme within Erika’s previous titles is providing a clear and actionable framework for self-improvement, and this book is no exception. After reading Be Bad First, I was struck by how I could relate the concepts embedded in it to real life experiences. I once had the opportunity to work with a successful entrepreneur who grew a business from an idea to a large and thriving enterprise. He did this by having a clear vision of where he wanted to go, being aware of changes that he needed to make to get there, continually questioning the next move, and having the tenacity to overcome a few false starts along the way. This lines up well with what is covered in the book.

Most often books of this type fail my personal litmus test by being somewhat “cushy”, but this book is definitely not one of those.

It's OK if you plan to score below 650 in quantative section

I had purchased this book in order to study more comprehensively about a single subject of geometry. The book fell far away from my expectations. The geometry reviews and formulas included in the book have an extremely narrow focus. The Level of the examples and questions presented in the book can be placed somewhere between very easy and easy,they do not give you a good geometry work out at all. The only good thing about the book is that they give you free 1 year online access to manhattan gre web site where you can have additional tests and also study for the verbal section.
so if you're willing to settle down for a score not much more than 600, this book can help you without getting you into so much trouble.

Not as advanced as I expected

This would probably be a good starter book for someone who was lost on how to even approach basic GRE geometry problems. It even spends a few *pages* describing how to set up an equation based on a geometric figure. For some reason, I was under the impression it would help me get from an already high level to the top, but this was a false impression. That said, it did provide a couple of problems that threw me for a loop, and went into my "tricky problems" collection. For those looking for practice on advanced problems, I would recommend the GRE Math Prep Course (Nova's GRE Prep Course) (formerly Math Bible).

The very best thing about this book, though, and it is well worth the price, is the access to the online, computer-adaptive practice tests. You can take them up to 6 times without seeing the same problem twice, and I suppose, if you improved a great deal, you could do it more times than that. This includes practice on all sections, not just quantitative. This is invaluable, and getting access through buying the book costs less than half of what they sell it for on their website.

Love this Creative Expoloration of Resin!

Ever since I saw my first superchunky, gorgeous colored resin bangle, available for sale at an online store back in the early 2000's, I have been intrigued by the mystique of always different resin jewelry. Yes I kick myself to this day that I never bought that bangle!

Now I spot brilliant fabulous clear resin jewlery, with pretty silver embellishments, and inlaid semiprecious stones, for sale online. I see resin as well on etsy with yummy looking real candy pieces or sprinkles and glitter floating cheerily in the molded colorful bangles or pendants.

Well, I have finally broken down and bought my own how to book, from the best teacher around, and I am thrilled! Now that I own this award winning book, The Art of Resin Jewelry, by Sherri Haab, I can stop looking and start doing! Having already "devoured" this great book, I plan to get to work (or to play!) as soon as possible! I am hoping to stretch my imagination to the fullest, and to see what I can do as well, with resin as my launching pad!

Sherri Haab is the perfect guide for a neophyte like me! I need HER clear writing style. I need the fun of seeing the variety of her projects, such as her high art "Pod Bead" bracelet, shown in two colors, and her ultra hip Techno Polymer Clay Bezels (which obviously use more than just resin as the medium you work with). That second project I just mention comes from a whole section in the book she offers which is called "Combining Resin With Polymer Clay". Everthing is so fascinating!

The author is straightforward in her writing style and her book is great, in the manner in which she assists the reader to take the intial steps toward learning how to create coated resin, casted, molded or combined medium resin jewelry.

Not only did she produce this super cool book, she has a website where you can pick up the things you will need to create you own jewelry (molds, resin, colors, powders, bracelet blanks, ring blanks and more) without going through the sometimes confusing process of wandering around in a local craft store or even two, looking here and there and checking and rechecking your list of required resin needs you have to obtain to get started. This book and her site will get you started. Who knows were you will end up!

I love this book! I am please with the saftey precautions she is careful to explain, I love the projects, and I feel that this is a terrific all around crafting book!

Easy Steps for Creating Lovely Jewelry

Well written and well researched. I especially liked the fact that the suppliers of materials needed for creating the projects in the book, were listed in the last part of the book. Sherri's instructions were easy to follow and the photos of each step were extremely helpful. It good that both advanced as well as beginners are able to use this book and come up with excellent results.
Many of the different techniques possible for using resin were explained which gives the reader the desire to jump in and start to make some lovely creations.

A great resource

This book takes the mystery out of working with resin. It explains mold-making in good detail and provides useful info for choosing the right raw materials. Not every artist can also teach, but Ms. Haab is skilled at both. The book is well laid out, not repetitive, and provides sample projects along with a list of necessary materials. Many of the projects are not my style preference, but written descriptions and pictures are clear and can be used for inspiration. Published in 2006, it is recent enough that the raw materials are still relevant and available.

An Apology that Needs No Apology

When Stephen Gosson attacked poetry in his book The School of Abuse, Sir Philip Sidney correctly saw it as a Puritan assault on imaginative literature. Making matters worse for poets was that Gosson was far from the only voice denouncing the poetic arts. Further, from the classical writers of ancient Greece and Rome right up to Sidney's day there was a tendency to view poetry primarily in terms of what it could offer on a teaching and persuasive level. The ability of poetry to delight was secondary to the latter two. Finally, Gosson's comments were typical of those who still remembered Plato's strictures against poetry from The Republic. It was to confront all these anti-poetic dialectics that Sidney wrote A Defense of Poetry.

In order for Sidney to persuade an audience that he saw as much like himself, he had to couch his response in a manner that would resonate with educated Renaissance courtiers. His structure of dividing his essay into the classic divisions of a judicial argument was a brilliant success. His frequent use of classical allusions reinforce his overarching thesis that poetry has a right to exist because it is the only literary medium that can combine the sister arts of history and philosophy into a means that can teach, persuade, and delight. The modern reader must remember that in Sidney's day such familiarity with history, philosophy, Latin, Greek, and rhetoric was a given.

Once Sidney exposes the shortcomings of history and philosophy, he can assert that far from poetry representing a tissue of lies and a false reality, poetry rather is seen as creating an alternate reality, one that emerges from the poet's own imagination, creating that which did not previously exist. Since poetry reveals a fiction of life, it cannot then lie in any meaningful way. It is essential, he notes, that this alternate reality must do more than teach, delight, or persuade. For virtue to be inculcated in the reader, poetry must motivate that reader to actualize the virtue within the poem and incorporate that virtue into his own daily life. It is this claim that poetry must function as an architectonic or science of sciences that renders Sidney as relevant today as in his day.

Sidney does not shy away from the positions of poetry's opponents. Indeed, he even agrees with some of their claims that some poetry is offensive, but he is quick to note that when a poem offends a reader's sensibilities, that offense is a function of the inept poet and not the poem itself. His evidence is cumulative in effect. He directly addresses and disposes of the charges of Gosson and others of his ilk that poetry is inherently insignificant, emasculating, untrue, and salacious.

Sidney does more than merely defend the right of poetry to exist; he also lashes out at other literary mediums that he himself felt offended by. For example, he was a strong believer in the classical unities of action, time, and space, and literature that violated these precepts such as tragic-comedy, he opposed. He further outlined his distaste for comedy whose purpose was only to provoke laughter based on what he saw as the crudities of farce that were then so popular. Comedy, he urged, ought to be based on a gentler and lighter view of the human condition. Sidney also roundly criticized sonneteers that were overly fond of poetic excesses like Euphuisms, annoying alliteration, and incongruous tropes. It becomes clear that Sidney is a product of a culture that dictates that nature and decorum are the ultimate arbiters of what passes for suitable literature and what does not. In A Defense of Poetry, Sidney was one of the first writers to suggest that poetry is a noble human invention precisely because a well-written poem can make the reader a better person for the reading of it. In one of history's strange ironies, Sidney rescued Stephen Gosson from a well-deserved place in the dustbin of history by defending what was to Gosson as quite indefensible.
