About the Author
JEFF CHANG is the author of Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation and Who We Be: A Cultural History of Race in Post–Civil Rights America. He has been a USA Ford Fellow in Literature and the winner of the American Book Award and the Asian American Literary Award. He is the executive director of the Institute for Diversity in the Arts at Stanford University.

Absolutely beautiful. Terrifying, but a beautiful read. The passion Chang has here is palpable (as usual). I think this is perhaps an essential read in understanding race in American/Western culture today.

"Chang is brilliant"

First, I am 68 years old. Those of my generation oftentimes--no, almost incessantly--talk about the selfishness, lack of meaningful results, and inability to problem solve, of millennials and virtually anyone under the age of 40. Jeff Chang, in "We Gon' Be Alright" documents clearly the fallacy of that line of thought. This small (192 pages) hand-size book is a masterpiece of generational understanding and evidence of contemporary collective action to bring about needed change in America today. This book is a must read for all "leaders", those who are willing to accept positions of leadership, and those who are privileged to occupy advisory roles to those who carry the heavy burden of public policy development and major crisis management in our world today.

A thoughtful portrayal of America's never-ending problem with segregation

"We Gon' Be Alright," a collection of essays on race and resegregation in America, is fascinating at times and convoluted at others. As one might expect, it lacks real structure, at one point Jeff Chang goes from talking about the growth of the protest movement fostered in by Ferguson to the marginalization that even Asian Americans feel.
The book does a good job of attempting to cover the most important issues surrounding racial tensions. However, it often feels like Chang is trying to cram too much thought, especially in a piece of literature less than 200 pages.
Perhaps the most poignant section is that on resegregation, a topic often overlooked when speaking of tension in America. Chang preaches the inconvenient truth of America's never-ending feeling towards African Americans: They are "seen as movable and removable." Chang even looks for solutions to this overlooked problem, "ending resegregation is about understanding the way we allow ourselves to stop seeing the humanity of others."
One quote from Martin Luther King Jr. resonates throughout Chang's thoughts on the growing protest movement: "a riot is the language of the unheard."
In the end, Chang promotes love and kindness over separation and segregation: "redemption is out there for us if we are are always in the process of finding love and grace."
