Good one !
By Gabriel
Wowwww, this one is a winner

I'm not a found of pattern grading but as I told on my review of the Jeanne Price book: I've started to get quite found of grading and calculations involved in the process. It's almost like a game.

There are lots of explanations about anthropometry and surveys, difference measurements tables (depending on the age etc...). The process is explained very clearly throught very straight forward diagram and instructions. There are exercises to do, I know some people will think that it's unfair to pay a book and end up filling blanks. Guess what? When it comes to learning practical skills it's good to read the theory but so much better to put it on practice. With this book you have exercises you can correct by re-reading the previous chapter and getting more efficient and aware of the way a grading is done.

This book explain how to grade : manually (with a machine and with a grid) and with a computer. But the first goal is to teach how to establish a grading rule, whatever the measurement table, whatever the size range..

As a french lad I've been struggling to convert inches into centimeters and compare the PS 42-70 grading system with our french sizing tables and evolution between sizes (but the principle is still the same and as far as I'm concerned, once all the US/FR maths are done , it's crystal clear and it's a very good exercise since I'm not blindly following the chart. Yay,you can call me a masochist if you want ;-))

This book really is full of informations and totally professional, if you're a student or searching a way to grade up or down you commercial patterns this might not be for you.

You'll find lots of different models, including Sleeve/body combination, underarm panel, grading for stretch garments. OK, I have to admit this chapter was way to hard for my brain this week end (converting metric to imperial + changing grading table + calculating the amount of stretch... No way my brain could keep up... But let's try that next week ;-) )

The chapter on grading for specifications was one I was waiting for (as I do spec sheets basically half of my time).

I'm not a pro when it comes to childrenswear so I won't give any comments on that part.

This book is very dense but very informative. It contains much more text than the Price book but that doesn't bother me at all, I like to understand things as much as doing it so that's a good point (and you can always skip the text and focus on diagrams if you prefer to). The spiral binding is a plus and the CD is a really enjoyable bonus (don't hesitate to print templates and test yourself of just write notes or whatever...)

You just need 2 things to understand the book.
By Marco Franco
I loved it. I am still reading ans studying it. And honestly it is a book anybody loving the sewing world can understand ghe principles to grading patterns. The two things you need to have are the following
1. You just need to have some basic knowledge on how to substract, add, multiply or divide fractions (ie. 1/2, 3/4, 5/8 etc etc). If you do not know how to do it, just search some tutorials in you tube, there are several, and you are done.
2. Take enough time to read slowly and carefully the book, you can skim the first chapter, watch out! I did not say skip, i said skim, so you still need tomtake a look at it, and beginning chapter 2, take your time reading slowly to understand the concepts, do like you are attending a class and take your notes, that is all you need.

If you are never going to use the computer grading option, you will anyway learn the basics of that and still get learn how to upgrade manually.

I am still studying the book, but so far, I am glad I picked this one.

I hope thos review help others.

Thanks
Marco

Not Quite What I Expected
By Shela Simpson
This book was not quite what I expected, but I still found it helpful when grading a pattern. It is geared to both manual and computer grading, split about 50/50 between the two topics. There is some historical explanation and lots of charts which was nice as it saved time in the calculations needed, but I was thinking this book would be more a 'how to' than it actually is. There is a lot of great information on these pages, but it you are looking for a book to help you learn and understand the concepts of pattern grading I would suggest looking a bit further because this book assumes you possess grading knowledge to some extent.
