About the Author
Kristine Mraz is coauthor - with Alison Porceli and Cheryl Tyler - of the new Purposeful Play, the book that helps you make play a powerful part of your teaching. Her previous title is the bestselling A Mindset for Learning (coauthored with Christine Hertz), which provides practical and powerful strategies for cultivating optimism, flexibility, and empathy alongside traditional academic skills. She is also coauthor - with Marjorie Martinelli - of Smarter Charts and Smarter Charts for Math, Science, and Social Studies. Their popular blog chartchums keeps teachers in touch with ongoing and relevant classroom issues and ways to use charts as a support. Chartchums is also on Facebook and on Twitter @chartchums! Kristi teaches Kindergarten in the New York City Public schools. In addition to writing and teaching, she consults in schools across the country and as far away as Taiwan. She primarily supports teachers in early literacy, play, and inquiry based learning. Alison Porcelli is coauthor (with Kristi Mraz and Cheryl Tyler) of Purposeful Play. She also coauthored A Quick Guide to Boosting English Acquisition in Choice Time, with Cheryl. Alison is Vice Principal at PS 59 in Manhattan and worked for eight years as a senior staff developer at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University, where she consulted nationally and internationally to bring exceptional literacy practices to schools. Before that, she was a kindergarten teacher. Alison's playground is in Bedford, NY where she resides with her husband, Tom, and son, Preston.

Cheryl Tyler is coauthor of Purposeful Play with Kristi Mraz and Alison Porceli. She has worked extensively in New York City schools as a kindergarten teacher, staff developer, consultant, and the principal of PS 277 in the South Bronx. She is currently the director of Reading Rescue at Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. Cheryl and Alison are coauthors of A Quick Guide to Boosting English Acquisition in Choice Time, K-2.

Much needed information, great topic, with useful strategies,

Recent research and evidence shows a clear positive correlation confirming the significant and positive impact purposeful play can have on early learning. Even so, many centers and/or schools have yet to deem the "purposeful play" approach outline in this book to be worthy of professional development time it so rightly deserves.

As a result, the importance of purposeful play opportunities as a part of a child's regular day and they are all too often overlooked. As such, these missed moments remain a source of untapped learning.

So why is this?

One director told me that guided play (often used as another name for purposeful play) was a "talent, which separated the so-so teachers from the exceptional teachers, and was not a skill that could be taught. "

Recently, I was working with at a local preschool looking to change their public image. After observing several times, I decided to suggest the director consider some professional development for the instructors in "purpose driven play" and I was slightly shocked at her reaction.

She laughed and quickly dismissed my idea saying, "they either know how to include "purposeful play" or they don't. Trying to teach it would be like trying to teach someone to plan ahead, either they're a planner or they're not."

I, however, disagree.

I personally know of several industrious teachers who have successfully trained themselves and now include activities and purposeful play sessions as a part of their daily or weekly lesson plan.
One of my favorite home preschool programs, Mother Goose Time, is based on the foundations behind guided play or purposeful play teaching practices.

Moreover, I have receive emails from home-based and center-based educators who have started incorporating practices like those outlined in this book, stating what a enormous difference it has made in their child's learning or their students' learning.

Additionally I have conducted parent interviews, and they too confirm what recent research and my personal findings have shown.

Guided or directed play can make a huge different in a young child's learning and it encourages a positive mindset for children.

I look forward to receiving my own copy, and I will update my review once I have had the opportunity to read the book more thoroughly.

Until then, and since this is a subject near and dear to my own heart, I feel the book to be well worth a spotlight and wish to extend up my humble kuddos to the authors for increasing awareness and offering a practical starting point.

This book should be essential reading for all elementary school teachers! I loved how the authors understand that the work of childhood is important and meaningful, and their message of teaching to the whole child and honoring that child as a unique individual whose desires and needs matter.
