A good work up for the "poor" cousin of the KID!
By S. Everson
A good discussion of the OID. Tay, a correspondence chess master, works mainly in three chapters covering three different White approaches to Black's choice of the Old Indian Defence. The main problem for me to date is what to do if White does not follow the book's move orders or quite reach the designated positions. The obvious answer is homework. Fire up the old database and get to work. This is a good "how to play..." book. The opening is solid and one expects to counterattack White's various setups at the appropriate moment.

Old Indian lives!!!!!!
By Traci A Reed
Great book for learning about the Old Indian. I play this defense because; not too many are familiar with it at the club level. A good surprise weapon in the right hands!

The best opening for bullet chess... and who is this Legend?
By Objective
OID is the best bullet / blitz opening bar none. The reason is simple: there are really not that many sound openings that you can instantly and often pre move the first 10-20 moves! So, in many instances, you end up with a 30-60 second lead in blitz or 5-10 second lead in bullet - huge advantages in the right hands! So, this alone should be a great reason to consider this opening, esp in a world where over the board chess is a rare luxury and most of us end up playing most of our chess on the computer or phone, in faster and faster time controls.

On the book itself, I'd say Tay breathes fresh ideas into an otherwise old and boring opening by reputation. Strategic ideas are explained clearly and shown how they are executed in a carefully curated selection of games. Tay is a full time chess author and trainer of many promising juniors in Singapore. Before that, he was a full time teacher. So, teaching is very much in his blood and it shows in the efforts to produce books that shed new light on the game, rather that some of the mass produced tomes that we see by the same publisher nowadays.

Watch out for Tay's next book - he will be writing about the Chess Legend of Singapore. This is a player that plays the ugliest chess in a way that scores a huge number of points. He is also the only player in Singapore to score the triple (holding the national championship, national rapid and national blitz titles in the same year). Many have quit chess after losing to him, in total despair. Stay tuned for the book on Legendary Chess...
