About the Author
Steve Zumdahl is the author of market-leading textbooks in introductory chemistry, general chemistry, honors-level chemistry, and high school chemistry. Recently retired from his long-time position as Director of Undergraduate Programs at the University of Illinois, he has received numerous awards for his contributions to chemical education. These include the National Catalyst Award in recognition of his contribution to chemical education, the University of Illinois Teaching Award, the UIUC Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising Award, and the School of Chemical Sciences Teaching Award (five times). He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Wheaton College (IL), and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

Susan A. Zumdahl earned a B.S. and M.A. in Chemistry at California State University--Fullerton. She has taught science and mathematics at all levels, including middle school, high school, community college, and university. She is past director of the Merit Program for Emerging Scholars in Chemistry at the University of Illinois. In addition, she spearheaded the development of a sophisticated web-based electronic homework system for chemistry and is co-author on several chemistry textbooks.

an excellent textbook

I found the textbook to offer thorough coverage of general chemistry. It was used for two classes. The information is delivered in a straightforward manner, and uptake is enhanced by graphs and pictures, as well as detailed examples.

Chemistry is very methodical, and strict adherence to method is emphasized throughout the book.

The review questions offer tie-ins to mathematics and to other sciences -- for example, Calculus and Biochemistry. This is an excellent offering and makes me wonder if that is standard of chemistry textbooks. Although calculus was not required for the courses I took, understanding it is extremely helpful in understanding the basis of many of the formulas and will ease their retention and application.

I will be keeping this for a bit and going over the material on my own time. The information is foundational to all sciences.

I got a good deal on the book

I got a good deal on the book, but I don't really care for how this is written. I usually dedicate a great deal of time in my courses by reading the chapters, and this book is very... wordy? I don't know how to describe it, but I feel many of the concepts aren't clearly defined and while history is important many of the ideas are riddled with little factoids that may be interesting, but aren't relevant in a general chemistry class.

Poorly Written, Confusing Text

I do hate this textbook. I have used it for General Chemistry I & 2. The authors have a knack for poorly explaining topics, and accelerating from 0 to 60 in one sentence, so to speak. This leaves the chemistry novice really grappling to understand their thought process. I would not recommend this book to anyone. I got As in both classes, but not thanks to this book.
