Anthropogenic transformation of the coastal zone continues at a steady pace, especially in the developing maritime countries, where coastal resources are often crucial to national economies. The 1992 Rio de Janeiro UN Conference on Environment and Development recognized the expediency of an integrated and sustainable use of all coastal resources, functions and services grounded on sound scientific data.
The present volume is based on the 1994 international workshop Integrated Coastal Zone Management, and brings together contributions by leading specialists both on basic concepts and on applications of coastal management. The work is divided into six parts, dealing with the conceptual framework of ICZM; regional and global aspects of coastal management; environmental assessment in ICZM; capacity building and technology transfer; monitoring and environmental analysis; and case studies and status of ICZM plans. The book also incorporates an interactive ICZM planning module, COSMO, which can be of use in designing a management plan for a coast. Attention is also given to long-term environmental effects of present-day actions. It is hoped that COSMO will prove an additional learning tool for ICZM practitioners and enhance the value of the book.
This work is intended to give a broad coverage of conceptual and technical aspects of ICZM, and will be of use to operational executives as well as students of ICZM, environmental economists, policy-makers and senior managers in the international development agencies and governmental and non-governmental organizations. It can be recommended as a textbook and as a reference work.

A wonderful emotive story with lovable characters at the heart of it.

With my short career as a reader of Molly's, I'm so impressed by her style of storytelling. She writes damaged characters so well. She has the ability to bring forth the beauty in her protagonists, who have lived through ugly experiences. Not only does this highlight their strength of character, but also makes what could be a depressing topic, one the reader wants to journey through with them.

Gabe is a successful children's author, from the outset his vulnerability was his most noticeable and endearing characteristic. Although a seemingly well adjusted adult, the repercussions of his childhood see Gabe look to Elena as some form of therapy.

It quickly becomes apparent their liaison goes beyond that of escort and client. Elena is an astute character, she knows Gabe's intentions go beyond the physical. She was patient and honest with him and I really liked her for that. In some ways Gabe & Elena are kindred spirits. Like him, Elena has also been let down by an important figure growing up and she can relate to him in more ways than he can appreciate.

Although a short novella, The Heart of It tells a vivid and through story. That said, I would welcome any decision made to expand on their story.

Molly is a writer who has the capability of ensnaring readers into her stories from the first few pages. Everything I Left Unsaid and The Truth About Him are proof of this, once again Molly further compounds this fact with, The Heart of It.

What There Is, Is Good but There Should Be More

I'm not really sure what to say about The Heart of It. It's a short story/novella so I expected things to move swiftly, but I felt like I was reading an idea for a whole novel that the author didn't finish and decided to release in the abbreviated form. The character development and pacing were fine until about 60% of the novella at which point the author fast-forwards two months, then another two weeks, then three months, and then one year, at which point H, h, and her son have a reunion and their HEA. I was also disappointed that the last 20% of my kindle book was a sample of a previously released M. O'Keefe novel. OTOH, I only paid $.99 for The Heart Of It, so I guess I can't complain too much.

My Review:
You can understand early on why Gabe would choose Elena to open up to. Sometimes it takes someone the same but opposite extreme to understand what you've been through and it takes that same thing for you to be able to lower your guard. Explaining what he's been through to Sally sweetheart wouldn't work and pairing two broken people tends to mesh well in romances like this. Despite the story being so short it works and you still get the emotional satisfaction regardless of its minimal length.

About the Author
Justin Sweet is the John H. Boalt Professor of Law, Emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley. Born and raised in Wisconsin, he attended the University of Wisconsin, where he received a B.A., phi beta kappa, in literature in 1951 and an LL.B. in 1953. He was note editor for the "Law Review" and Order of the Coif. After serving on the staff of the attorney general of Wisconsin, he was in the Judge-Advocate General's Corps and later practiced in Milwaukee. He joined the Boalt faculty in 1958, where he taught Contracts, Construction Law, and Insurance until the early 1990s. Sweet was a visiting professor at the University of Rome (as a Fulbright Lecturer), Hebrew University, University of Leuven in Belgium, Osgoode Hall in Canada, Tel-Aviv University, and the University of Fribourg. He has written articles in many legal journals, many of which were collected in Sweet, Anthology of Construction Law Writings by the American Bar Association in 2010. He also wrote Sweet on Construction Law for the American Bar Association in 1997. Beginning in 2010, he has been writing on historic cases in each issue of the Journal of Legal Affairs & Dispute Resolution in Engineering and Construction. He was the co-founder and director of the International Construction Conference. It met in Fribourg, Switzerland, Berkeley, California and Washington D.C.

For nearly thirty years, Marc M. Schneier has been the Editor of Construction Litigation Reporter, a national reporter analyzing legal developments in the construction industry, which is published by Thomson Reuters/West. He was an Adjunct Professor of Construction Law at the University of San Francisco School of Law, has published numerous articles in various legal journals, and provides consulting services. His first book was CONSTRUCTION ACCIDENT LAW: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO LEGAL LIABILITY AND INSURANCE CLAIMS, published by the American Bar Association in 1999. His most recent book is LEGAL ASPECTS OF ARCHITECTURE, ENGINEERING AND THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS, 8th edition, co-authored by Justin Sweet and published in 2009 by Cengage Learning. Marc earned his B.A. in Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley in 1978. He earned his J.D. from the University of California, Davis (King Hall) in 1981 and was awarded the Bureau of National Affairs Award for academic performance. He practiced law in San Francisco prior to being hired as Editor of Construction Litigation Reporter.

Dr. Blake Wentz is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Construction Management Program at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, a small, private university located in Milwaukee, WI. He is a Certified Professional Constructor (CPC) as well as an LEED Accredited Professional. His specialty areas in Construction Management are mechanical systems and construction law. Dr. Wentz has been retained and given opinion testimony as an expert witness in several construction litigation cases since 2005. Before entering academia he was the Vice-President of Wentz Plumbing and Heating in Lincoln, NE for over 5 years. Since 2009 he is the instructor for ethics in construction for the Association of General Contractors (AGC) of Wisconsin's Leadership Training Program. He is currently the Director of Region 3 of the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) and sits on their national board of directors. He also is a trustee of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) National Education Foundation. Dr. Wentz has been the recipient of the Mechanical Contractors Association of America's (MCAA) Educator of the Year for both 2011 and 2012. He was also the recipient of the ASC National Teaching Award in 2010 and the Educator of the Year award in 2008 by Wisconsin Builder Magazine. Most recently he was named as the Associate of the Year in 2013 by the AGC of Greater Milwaukee.

Simply fascinating

Loved the story. Loved the characters. Loved the settings. Yes, it is one of a series, as are all of the GREAT books. Compare this to the "Little House" stories or "North and South". I am in awe of her writing and will be looking forward to the next installment of this saga.

Grrrreat!!!

I bought the first book in the Passion and Glory Series, read it and I was hooked. Book 2 in the series gets even better. Not a dull moment from beginning to end. This book doesn't drag on, its fast paced with adventure and great action scenes. When reading the scenes of Sero and Nicolas together their passionate devotion for one another makes sparks of passion grow into flames. And it makes me want to just read this book over and over again.
I can't wait to see what new trials and adventure Nicolas will have to face in Samantha Kaye Book 3 in this series. Read it you will love it.

In his youth, Julian Schwinger was a nuclear physicist, turning to classical electrodynamics after World War II. In the years after the war, he was the first to renormalize quantum electrodynamics. Subsequently, he presented the most complete formulation of quantum field theory and laid the foundations for the electroweak synthesis of Glashow, Weinberg, and Salam, and he made fundamental contributions to the theory of nuclear magnetic resonance, to many-body theory, and to quantum optics. He developed a unique approach to quantum mechanics, measurement algebra, and a general quantum action principle. His discoveries include 'Feynman's' parameters and 'Glauber's' coherent states; in later years he also developed an alternative to operator field theory which he called Source Theory, reflecting his profound phenomenological bent. His late work on the Thomas-Fermi model of atoms and on the Casimir effect continues to be an inspiration to a new generation of physicists. This biography describes the many strands of his research life, while tracing the personal life of this private and gentle genius.

About the Author
Jagdish Mehra has been University Distinguished Professor of Sciences and Humanities at the University of Houston, Texas for many years and also served as U.N.E.S.C.O.-Sir Julian Huxley Distinguished Professor of Physics and The History of Science at Trieste and Paris. He has published extensively on the historical and conceptual development of modern physics and is the acclaimed biographer of 'The Beat of a Different Drum: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman'. From Spring 1959 until Schwinger's death, Mehra remained his close friend. Kimball A. Milton is Professor of Physics at the University of Oklahoma, where he leads the theoretical high-energy physics group. He has numerous publications in the field of quantum field theory. He was a student of Julian Schwinger at Harvard and was his postdoctorate associate at U.C.L.A. for nearly a decade.

The forgotten genius

This book should be required reading for every physicist and every physics student. While the technical material can be tough going, it can be skipped over, and there is much personal history to interest the lay reader. Schwinger's accomplishments were not just comparable to Feynman's; they were much greater. Only by reading this book can one appreciate all that he did, including anticipating electroweak unification, introducing the Higgs mechanism, and proving the spin-statistics theorem. Most importantly, he perfected Quantum Field Theory (his third trip "up the mountain"). The tragedy is that, like most of Schwinger's work, QFT has been abandoned and forgotten - at least in its true meaning of a world made of fields - leaving the world to drown in a sea of chaos caused by the particle picture. As I show in my book for the lay reader [ASIN:0473179768 Fields of Color: The theory that escaped Einstein], which is dedicated in part to the memory of Julian Schwinger, only QFT can resolve the paradoxes of relativity and quantum mechanics that arise from the particle view.

Great Book!

This book was sick. A really really good look into one of the greatest minds. Just about as much physics as there is history in it so the average physicist will have a ball reading it. I personally loved the perspective that it gave with how physics is approached from within the theoretical community. It really gave humanity to some of the heavy weights of the 20th century; with how the ideas were developed, how personal issues effected the outcomes of certain events, and how Julian Schwinger took on the monumental task (alone and in the middle of the night) one of man kinds greatest achievements of mankind: the formulation and execution of QED.

The fifth volume of McCullough's continuing saga of the history of Rome meets the stellar standards she has set in her earlier books (e.g., Caesar's Women, LJ 12/95). It opens in 54 B.C., with Caesar civilizing and romanizing the different tribes in Britannia and Gaul. After five years of almost constant warfare, Caesar turns all his political brilliance to defeating Pompey, his former son-in-law, who wants to strip Caesar of his power. McCullough clearly loves her subject and has done voluminous research, smoothly interweaving the vast number of facts into the narrative. She gives us a living Caesar, the superb military tactician and the man who cried at his mother's and daughter's deaths. It's not hard to see why his troops (and many women) loved him. The novel is further enriched by McCullough's hand-drawn maps, illustrations of major players, and useful glossary. Essential for historical fiction collections.

The story of Caesar's Gallic Wars (roughly 5851 b.c.) and return to Rome warfare, followed fictively and, in the main, meticulously, from Caesar's Commentaries. Again, the portraits are memorable--from Brutus (here, a money-mad ``wet fish'' with acne) to Cleopatra (scrawny, ugly, calmly plotting fratricide)--and the politicking is showy, sly, witty, and often deadly. At the close of Caesar's Women (1996), McCullough's fourth massive staging of the power wrests and wrestlings of mighty men of ancient Rome, Julius Caesar, a true colossus of skill and brilliance, had left for ``Further Gaul.'' Now, while mopping up the revolts in his detested Britannia of ``blue-painted relics,'' he receives word from Pompey the Great, First Man in Rome and husband of Caesar's lovely daughter Julia, that Julia and his mother are dead. Grief drains him, but oddly he grows in strength, proceeding to un-Romanized Gaul, pacifying tribe after tribe, and eventually defeating Vercingetorix, an ambitious but inexperienced leader out to unite Gaul, who would not accept Caesar's offer of Rome's ``light rein'' in a ``shrinking world.'' While Caesar with his beloved legions win Gaul with extraordinary tactics and hardship, his foes in Rome have swung Pompey--once a Golden Boy, now tarnished with fatuous conceit and lack of political savvy--to their cause, which is, simply, to destroy Caesar. Although scrupulous in his observance of law, Caesar crosses the Rubicon to become Rome's aggressor. (McCullough appropriately uses Plutarch's account of his utterance: ``Let the dice fly high!'' instead of the gloomy ``The die is cast.'') While temporarily Dictator, afterward, Caesar pursues Pompey's armies until the Great One's sad end. In the wings for Book Six: the gorgeous Mark Antony, slinky Octavius, and Cleopatra. Rewarding but rugged terrain for the casual reader. Armchair generals, though, should love this--perhaps with De bello Gallico at the ready. I have now read the whole series "MASTERS OF ROME".
Colleen McCullough does do her research. It is most pleasant, to also read about the "minor" characters revolving around the main "players". Julius Caesar does come alive - which is something you won't get in a history book!

Great History with fiction

Ancient Rome really comes to life in this whole series which I heartily recommend. Start with the "First Man in Rome" and read them in sequence - you'll be dying to know what comes next. I studied Latin in HS and read about Caesar later on my own which hardly makes me a scholar, but I knew enough to see that the portrayal of Caesar as handsome, brilliant, and generally a superb person, is not out of line with what many other more scholarly people have concluded. There is a reason, after all for his name having come down in history so strongly - he was revered as a saint in Medieval times (obviously, their dates were off) and the words Kaiser and Czar were pathetic attempts to embrace his glory. The earlier books in the series for the first time clarified for me what the heck was going on in the apparently endless Italian and Roman internecine wars. Throw in some lively and sympathetic portraits of people I'd always heard of as if they were born as marble busts and you have a terrific read with a lot of history.
I can't wait for the next in the series.
