Maeda @ Media, by John Maeda

John Maeda is one of the world's leading experimental graphic designers and is quickly becoming a digital culture icon. His early preoccupation with the intersection of computer programming and digital art has resulted in a fascinating, interactive, and stunningly beautiful collection of work. Maeda has pioneered many of the key expressive elements that are prevalent on the Web today. Among his most well-known works are The Reactive Square, which features a simple black square on a computer screen that changes shape if one yells at it, and Time Paint, in which paint flies across the screen. He has created innovative, interactive calendars, digital services, and advertisements for companies such as Sony, Shiseido, and Absolut Vodka.

This is the first publication to present a complete overview of Maeda's work and philosophy. A glorious visual exploration of ideas and graphic form, Maeda @ Media takes you through Maeda's beginnings in early computerized printouts, to his reactive graphics on CD-ROM, to his dynamic experiments on the Web, to his pedagogical approach to digital visual art, and finally to his overarching quest to understand the very nature of the relationship between technology and creativity. Six thematic chapters provide an overview of his entire career and research. But this is not just a catalog of other work: interspersed between each chapter is a new visual essay that has been created exclusively for this publication to underline each of the major themes.

Coming together in a massive 480 pages, printed in a dazzling array of color combinations on three different kinds of paper, the result is a manifesto, a finely crafted manual and inspiration sourcebook all in one.

Review
"John Maeda deconstructs the digital world with the earned authority of an M.I.T.-trained computer scientist and a card-carrying artist. Being ambidextrous with Eastern and Western cultures, he can see things most of us overlook. The result is a humor and expression that brings out the best in computers and art."--Nicholas Negroponte

Exquisite, and if it's a bit bloated we'll let that pass
By Adam Greenfield
I have nothing but respect for John Maeda.
He's one of those rare people who stands at the cusp of three or four disciplines - say graphic design, programming, information architecture, and fine art - and exerts a gentle gravitational attraction on the long-sundered fields. He's a true practitioner of what E.O. Wilson calls "consilience," and I find his work unfailingly beautiful.
"Maeda@Media" is a far more comprehensive introduction to and summary of his work than his earlier ""Design by Numbers." It is also an exquisitely produced volume, and if it is occasionally self-indulgent (spending 60-odd pages on a graphic that spells out "IT IS CUSTOMARY THAT THE SIDES OF A PAGE BE NEGLECTED IN FAVOR OF ITS FRONT AND BACK" on their edges) - well, I'll forgive that. It's a gorgeous tome.
Maeda is doing vital and inspiring work; this book should be a kick in the pants to all those of us who work in any of the disparate fields his work touches upon: only connect.

Very Inspirational ...
By Edward D. Sepulveda Jr.
I have some programming skills and a budding web designer. I was really impressed with this body of work, especially considering the time frame it covers. The value for me was that the reader gets an understanding of what the "artist" has rendered. You you have read any of Paul Rand's essays, you can identify the significance of this work. This book is not a quick read, but a meal of ideas to be savored. I am still savoring this book, and it is really one of the best books I have enjoyed.
Thanks!

A Monument to Information Society
By Andrew M. Lin
I have always been impressed with John Maeda's work: "Tap, Type, Write" is beautifully interactive, "Design By Numbers" is extremely innovative. Professor Maeda's newest endeavor, Maeda@Media is no different. It is a monument to Information Aesthetics and an icon for Information Society at large. The book itself, is painstakenly crafted with different types of papers. The images inside evoke a million poignant words. Professor Maeda's insights are invaluable. John Maeda uncovers a rare beauty in computing.

A Warrior's Knowledge, Book 2: The Castes and the OutCastes, by Davis Ashura

With A Warrior's Path, Davis Ashura introduced fans to Arisa, an ancient world rich with history and myth where humanity struggles to survive the never-ending battle with the demon Suwraith and her hordes of Chimeras. Now Ashura's best-selling epic continues with A Warrior's Knowledge.

Rukh Shektan and Jessira Grey struggle to reach the OutCaste city of Stronghold before winter's snow bars all passages. Their travels test Rukh's will and hope as Chimeras hound their footsteps, but the most difficult challenge proves to be Stronghold itself. The city is not as Jessira described.

Rector Bryce and Mira Terrell form a reluctant alliance. Rector is forced to do the bidding of Dar'El Shektan - the man he betrayed - and works with Mira. They seek a means to bring down House Shektan's most bitter rival, Hal'El Wrestiva, the man responsible for Rukh's banishment. Meanwhile, Bree and Jaresh continue their search for the Sil Lor Kum. Danger lurks, and the withering knife murders continue as Hal'El Wrestiva, the SuDin of the Sil Lor Kum, furthers his own intentions.

And high in the heavens and watching over the world is Suwraith. Her clouded mind is clear for the first time in millennia, and she makes her own plans. The sorrow bringer has learned of Stronghold's existence.

A well worthwhile sequel
By Michael
A Warrior's Knowledge, the second book of The Castes & the OutCastes by Davis Ashura, is a worthy follow-up to that unique original. It has all of the things I enjoyed most about A Warrior's Path: well-developed characters with depth and consistency, lavish descriptions of a truly unique new fantasy world (Arisa), action, discovery, and a well-developed magic system that doesn't overwhelm the story. This is not a stand-alone novel; it picks up where the first left off, and sets the stage for the third and final book; it even has references to the short-story collection Tales of Arisa as Easter eggs for fans of this author. This book didn't have as many plot twists as the first book, but there were some satisfying and some tantalizing revelations, and the story advanced at a good pace. I eagerly await the final volume, and I highly recommend this book along with the first in the series.

A warriors knowledge
By jeremy
This is written as well as book one. Waiting for book 3. I like the authors style and how he formed the culture. Similar to Indian culture. But honestly I wanted to strangle some of these characters do to their prejudice. It says something when an author can make you want to punch a written character. I'm laughing at myself, but it's true. Anyway I'm not one to ruin a story by telling you all the details. I can just say this was a refreshing, New world, well thought out and most enjoyable read.Thank you David

More Sleepless Nights!
By Neal
This is another page turner by an author I'll be following in the future. The snapshots we get into the minds of the various characters, on both sides of this evolving story, elicit compassion even for (some of) the antagonists. This is a fun read, just like Ashura's first book, and like that one, I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys epic fantasy.

A Book that Shows Us How to Read a Poem
By A Customer
I first read "The Well Wrought Urn" in 1978, when I was a first year grad student. Now I assign it for English majors taking their final undergraduate seminar. "The Well Wrought Urn" is a collection of essays on various poems. The essays were published in various journals in the 1940s. Why is the book still read? It is read because these essays are superb examples of literary criticism at its best: insightful, accessible, graceful, witty. It is read because when one reads a poem, then reads Brooks' essay about it, then reads the poem again, one learns a great deal about how to understand poetry and gain from it meaning and pleasure. Brooks' insights aren't the only valid insights into these poems, but they are good ones. It's not that we read these essays to understand these specific poems, but to understand how to approach any poem. There's a lot of interesting literary criticism available in libraries, though far more is not very interesting or graceful. Few essays, however, are more helpful to students as tools for teaching the technique of literary analysis. Of course, Brooks, as a New Critic, is using a style of literary criticism not presently trendy. Still, the technique of discovering insights about poetry is still the same, no matter what the theory one uses.
The review below this one is worthwhile, but I would suggest that the author misses the joke. What he takes as condescension is a condescension that includes the readers within the circle of initiates. It doesn't scoff at the reader. Thus, it is meant to help English majors think that they are a sort of blessed priesthood who have been initiated into the secrets of the fellowship. (When I was in grad school, that's what I thought we were.) Of course, this is all somewhat tongue in cheek and meant to be witty.
About twelve years ago I had the pleasure of hearing Brooks, then quite elderly (I don't know if he is still alive), present a paper at a conference. I remember him as slim, polite, self-effacing--the essence of the Southern gentleman at his best.

Literary Criticism as if Literature Mattered
By A Customer
This book, written nearly a half-century ago, has never been out of print. To read it is to see why. With Cleanth Brooks, who taught at Yale for most of his career, you feel as if you are sitting in a seminar with the most brilliant professor you've ever known, one who is also a true gentleman with extraordinary solicitude for his students/readers. He takes you through the poems line by line and helps you to *see* the artistry of the poet at work. And so sparkling is his prose style that the essays are themselves works of art. This book is especially appropriate for students who are just beginning to appreciate poetry.

The Poem Over the Poet
By Martin Asiner
When one compares Understanding Poetry with The Well Wrought Urn, one is struck by an odd pairing of likenesses with differences. Both seek to advance the acceptance of New Critical tenets by listing a number of well-known poems and analyzing each to determine how the poet focuses attention on the organic unity, which requires the reader to consider how that poet integrates a dozen or so manifestations of language and structure all of which coalesce to produce the one "correct" interpretation. The primary difference does not lie in the many more poems of Understanding Poetry but rather in Brooks' determination to reply to the charges of critics who loudly complained that Brooks had unfairly and unreasonably excluded any reference to disciplines external to the purely literal. For Brooks, these external differences were holdovers from the previous generation's fascination with the historical/biographical school of literary interpretation, a related theory which suggests that facts from the life and times of the poet are crucial in fixing the behind the scenes mixing of form and content as prerequisites to uncovering the meaning. Brooks went to considerable lengths to emphasize that he had no problem with historical/biographical approaches to literature. They had their place in the literary scheme of things but criticism was not one of them. Brooks noted that there was no objective proof that knowing a fact about either the reader or his times revealed anything germane about the text. What historical/biographical criticism did not address were the excellences of a poem. Nor did they explain how the varied elements of New Critical analyses (figurative language, imagery, symbolism, etc) interacted with each other to uncover the meaning.

The most striking chapter was "The Heresy of Paraphrase." Brooks contended that it was impossible to write a prose paraphrase of a poem such that the paraphrase contained the full power and sweeping imagination of the originating poem. What the paraphrase had were the external trappings of the poem with none of the language that made that poem a poem. Language is a complex unity of a myriad of factors that add up to more than the sum of a poem's parts. If one substitutes the language of a paraphraser for the language of the poet, the result is not unlike comparing lightning to a lightning bug. One simply cannot mistake one for the other. Brooks' anathema toward paraphrase fits well into his schema concerning New Criticism in general. The focus should be on the words of the text not the re-worded words or life or history of either the poet or the critic. That The Well Wrought Urn is still a staple of criticism suggests that even if New Criticism as a distinct theory has long since left center stage as a power player the ability to use its principles of close reading is a telling reminder that a critical eye on a text is a tool that will never go out of style regardless of the inane theory making use of it.

Low quality
By Steven Williams
I can't say a lot about the content of this book; it has been a very difficult read. Tons of research compressed into one book, hard to follow, with scattered summaries that don't follow the main text sequence. But what I would really like to comment on is the Kindle experience.

This book is one of two required texts for an education class I am taking. My friend has the print edition, so I have been able to compare. Two major negative points jumped out to me at once:

First, the tables, figures, and other graphics are super low quality. All of these are bitmaps or some other raster type (whatever Kindle uses for eBooks, I assume) One cannot zoom in on them without changing the text size and losing the figure placement relative to the text. Not that it would help, though; when I do manage to get a figure to occupy the whole page, it is blurry and pixelated. My friend's print edition has beautiful figures, with precise lines and quality text. (For a typical example, those of you who can compare, look at Table 9.3.)

Second, there are no page numbers. A quote from the book's website: "While the book index is included, the page numbers have no meaning in the Kindle eBook, so it is only provided to indicate the topics that are included in the book." What nonsense! My teacher often instructs us to read the table on page such-and-such or turn to this page and read the section on whatever. I end up looking over at a friend's book, copying an exact phrase from that section into the Kindle search tool, and trying to find it that way. I think the author could even include a little "(Page 493 in the print edition)" blurb at the bottom to indicate the parallel. And the book's Contents (left hand side pullout in the Windows Kindle Reader) does not even include links to specific chapters, nor the index! I had to bookmark the index so I could go there to click on the links to chapters.

This brings up a point related to my first one. Tables, figures, and other graphics are totally rasterized, so I can't search using Kindle's tool to find "Figure 3.1" or "Table 5.2". Again, I have to copy text from around the figure from a friend's text edition, then search for that.

In summary, content aside, I feel cheated with the $49 price tag for this digital edition. Ten dollars off the print price is not worth this low quality. And I could get a used paperback copy for less. I have seen free Kindle books on Amazon with better linking and graphics. Let's hope the publishers can correct these issues soon (and without releasing another edition you have to pay for again).

Extremely thorough. Essential for any teacher.
By J. Ward
This is an extremely thick and thorough academic textbook on every aspect of teaching in all subject areas - maths, arts, english, etc. It's not a quick read but I would consider it an absolutely essential textbook for any college student who's looking to be a teacher one day. His chapter on Objectives (lesson planning step #1) is very, very good. Absolutely highly recommend.

A Staff Developer/Administrator/Teacher Opinion
By S. Schwartz
The Skillful Teacher is an incredible tool for working with both new and experienced teachers to fine-tune their classroom skills and expectations for student behavior and achievement. It explains what can (and often does) go wrong in a classroom, gives clear examples of ways to implement classroom procedures, and cites the pertinent research to support recommendations. I have used this book (mostly in its first edition which is very similar) to work teachers for years; it is thought provoking for both needy teachers and "master" teachers. I think highly enough of this book to have given it to my son when he began teaching high school.

Lots of detail in the book, no backstory
By SarahBethF
I'm only partially into reading this book, but I feel that I have to comment. I've seen the movie, and even in the first few chapters the book offers a ton of extra details. Things that move quickly in the movie are explained in far greater detail, even if we hear little of what the characters think. So far I have no problem with the writing. What there is little to none of is backstory. I assume that this is a decision that was made at the top. It seems that the powers that be want the backstory to either be developed in future movies, or told in some of the books that will come out. Don't expect to have all of your questions answered, but do get this book if you want a fuller sense of what's happening in the movie. Since I haven't finished the book yet, I'll give it 4 stars for "so far so good with lots of potential."

OK - now I've read the whole book. Could the action have been written in a more exciting way? Possibly, but I found myself getting swept along with the action most of the time. I appreciated the extra scenes and feel that I understand the movie better. I wish that there was more backstory, but am hopeful that all will be revealed in good time (you hear that Disney/Lucasfilm?1?). I'm just happy to have Star Wars back on track!

Don't bother, spend your $13 to see the movie again.
By John Wikman
It's...it's...it's just flat-out not well-written. The storyline is fine, because it's identical to the movie. You can tell where there were probably a couple of deleted scenes that got cut from the movie after the novelization was already written, but otherwise if you've seen the movie you've experienced the book. What had me almost unable to finish it though was the author's writing style. Creative writing 101 advice is to barely, if ever, use the present participle to lead into a sentence. The author does it _constantly_. Literally several times per paragraph. "Walking into the room, Rey saw BB-8. Beeping quickly, BB-8 rolled over." "Dashing across the hall, Finn avoided the blaster fire. Diving back, Han looked at Chewie." That kind of thing, repeated over. And over. And over. It slows the flow of the story way down and once you see it happening, you can't unsee it, and before long it's all you can focus on.

AFFECTIVE STORY ENHANCEMENT !!!
By R & N
The movie was a long awaited continuation of a tale that has taken a literal lifetime to share! How we waited for its arrival! Due to family illness, we were unable to see it when it first came out but recently watched its Starz Premiere. It was worth the wait! However, there were so many areas, subjects, topics that either flew by too fast or gave scant or insufficient information. It took multiple viewings to grasp certain aspects of the story because they went by so quickly! Other places, the story left whole series of questions begging to be answered! We purchased the book in hopes of gaining answers to these questions and thus further insight into the story! The book did a fairly good job of recounting the story while adding in some additional and significant information. For example, Rey's foray into the basement of Maz's castle and her first encounter with Luke's lightsaber was definitely enhanced by the book's recounting. Just so with the explanation of what happened to Poe after the initial crash he and Finn experienced on Jakku. There are still many questions left to be answered but isn't that the way with the entire series? The book answers enough, expounds enough and enhances the story enough to be well worth the effort, time and money to read it!!! Also, it's considerably less expensive now than when it first came out! We
recommend reading the book and then revisiting the movie.......Enjoy!!!

Notes of a native son, by James Baldwin

[Read by Ron Butler]

At last, a new audio edition of the book many have called James Baldwin's most influential work!

Written during the 1940s and early 1950s, when Baldwin was only in his twenties, the essays collected in Notes of a Native Son capture a view of black life and black thought at the dawn of the civil rights movement and as the movement slowly gained strength through the words of one of the most captivating essayists and foremost intellectuals of that era. Writing as an artist, activist, and social critic, Baldwin probes the complex condition of being black in America. With a keen eye, he examines everything from the significance of the protest novel to the motives and circumstances of the many black expatriates of the time, from his home in ''The Harlem Ghetto'' to a sobering ''Journey to Atlanta.''

Notes of a Native Son inaugurated Baldwin as one of the leading interpreters of the dramatic social changes erupting in the United States in the twentieth century, and many of his observations have proven almost prophetic. His criticism on topics such as the paternalism of white progressives or on his own friend Richard Wright's work is pointed and unabashed. He was also one of the few writing on race at the time who addressed the issue with a powerful mixture of outrage at the gross physical and political violence against black citizens and measured understanding of their oppressors, which helped awaken a white audience to the injustices under their noses. Naturally, this combination of brazen criticism and unconventional empathy for white readers won Baldwin as much condemnation as praise.

Notes is the book that established Baldwin's voice as a social critic, and it remains one of his most admired works. The essays collected here create a cohesive sketch of black America and reveal an intimate portrait of Baldwin's own search for identity as an artist, as a black man, and as an American.

Review
''The collected 'pieces' of the author of Go Tell It on the Mountain form a compelling unit as he applies the high drama of poetry and sociology to a penetrating analysis of the Negro experience on the American and European scene…The expression of so many insights enriches rather than clarifies, and behind every page stalks a man, an everyman, seeking his identity…and ours. Exceptional writing.'' --Kirkus Reviews

''Baldwin's vision, his humor, his tragically beautiful style, make this a book [to]…turn to for a long time.'' --American Scholar

''I owe a tremendous debt to the example of his work.'' --John Edgar Wideman, National Book Award nominee

''Written with bitter clarity and uncommon grace.'' --Time

''He named for me the things you feel but couldn't utter . . . articulated for the first time to white America what it meant to be American and a black American at the same time.'' --Henry Louis Gates Jr., author, essayist, and literary critc

''A straight-from-the-shoulder writer, writing about the troubled problems of this troubled earth with an illuminating intensity.'' --Langston Hughes, poet, social activist, and novelist

About the Author
James Baldwin (1924-1987) was educated in New York. His first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain, received excellent reviews and was immediately recognized as establishing a profound and permanent new voice in American letters. The appearance of The Fire Next Time in 1963, just as the civil rights movement was exploding across the American South, galvanized the nation and continues to reverberate as perhaps the most prophetic and defining statement ever written of the continuing costs of Americans' refusal to face their own history. It became a national bestseller, and Baldwin was featured on the cover of Time. The next year, he was made a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters and collaborated with the photographer Richard Avedon on Nothing Personal, a series of portraits of America intended as a eulogy for the slain Medger Evers. His other collaborations include A Rap on Race with Margaret Mead and A Dialogue with the poet-activist Nikki Giovanni. He also adapted Alex Haley's The Autobiography of Malcolm X into One Day When I Was Lost. He was made a commander of the French Legion of Honor a year before his death, one honor among many he achieved in his life.

From the Introduction

I did not know James Baldwin the essayist before my first year of college. I knew only the James Baldwin of novels and short stories and plays, a trusted man who gave me, with his Harlem and his Harlem people, the kind of world I knew so well from growing up in my Washington, D.C. They were all one family, the people in Harlem and the people in Washington, Baldwin told me in that way of all grand and eloquent writers who speak the eternal and universal by telling us, word by hard-won word, of the minutiae of the everyday: The church ladies who put heart and soul into every church service as if to let their god know how worthy they are to step through the door into his heaven. The dust of poor folks’ apartments that forever hangs in the air as though to remind the people of their station in life. The streets of a city where the buildings Negroes live in never stand straight up but lean in mourning every which way.

So I knew this Baldwin and, in that strange way of members of the same family, he knew me. When I went off to college in late August 1968, I took few books, anticipating the adequacy of the library that awaited me at Holy Cross College. I packed only two books of nonfiction, both bought in a used bookstore not long after I was accepted to college. Both had never been read. The first was a ponderous 1950s to me on writing logical and well-reasoned essays. I was never to read it in my time at Holy Cross, perhaps because it was so inaccessible. (Seeing it on my dormitory room’s bookshelf, Clarence Thomas, a month before his graduation from Holy Cross in 1971, purchased the book from me for $5; I do not recall what I paid for it.) And the second was Notes of a Native Son. I was going off to a new life, a life of the mind and education among white people, and I felt that since Bald- win’s fiction had taught me so much about black people, his essays might have a similar effect given where I was going.

I entered Holy Cross as a mathematics major, primarily because I had done well in math in high school. I was extremely shy then, and I had never had my vision tested and did not know enough about anything to realize that my frequent inability to see the blackboard could be solved with eyeglasses. I sat in the back of the freshman calculus class run by a standoffish professor who spent most of the period with his back to his students as he wrote on the blackboard, and with all of that, I fell further and further behind as the semester progressed.

I will go into English, I told myself in December, knowing how much I loved to read and knowing that a calculus D was coming and so there would be no life in mathematics. Before leaving for Christmas vacation, I picked up Notes of a Native Son for the first time, perhaps understanding that now my life would be increasingly one of essay writing. The first thing James Baldwin tells me in “Autobiographical Notes” is, “I was born in Harlem. . . .” A simple, unadorned statement, as if in saying it plainly the reader would have a better sense of the importance of that fact. It was Harlem, but because I was so familiar with the Baldwin of fiction, the Baldwin whose black people could be Washingtonians, he could only have begun to connect in a better way if he had said, “I was born in Washington, D.C. . . .”

A good bit of that introductory essay deals with being a writer, something that would not have much meaning for me for many years: the necessity of delving into oneself to be able to tell the truth about the world one writes about; the difficulties of being a Negro writer when “the Negro problem” is so widely written about; the desire, at the end of the day, to be “a good writer.”

But within that short essay is a thirty-one-year-old, some- what  worldly man (I did not get my first passport  until I was fifty-four) who is still grappling with having been born into a small and often less than caring world, which was, for good or bad, a part of a larger world that generally rejected him and his small world. I was a Holy Cross student—often happy to be a student at “the Cross”—but I knew every time I stepped out of my room in Beaven dormitory that no part of that place in Worcester, Massachusetts, had been made with me in mind. I felt that but did not yet have very many words for it. Baldwin gave them to me. This is Baldwin, with his “special attitude,” talking of Shakespeare and the cathedral at Chartres and Rembrandt and the Empire State Building and Bach: “These were not really my creations, they did not contain my history; I might search in them in vain forever for any reflection of myself. I was an interloper; this was not my heritage.”

And so he continued throughout the rest of Notes, a gloriously keen and sensitive mind, something I did not completely appreciate at the time, something I’m sure he would smile about now. I confess that I could not then grasp some of his more complex thoughts, perhaps because I was merely too young and the world had yet to take such a harsh hold on me. And other thoughts of his I just dismissed, no doubt because I was, again, too young and because I was developing a militant streak that scoffed at notions not in line with my own developing ones. That militancy came naturally with the murder of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Vietnam War and with the new awareness that I was black in a white world. The militant me asked, for example, why would Baldwin write at times as if he were not black but some observer, a guilty one, true, but still an observer. “Our dehumanization of the Negro then,” he says to me in “Many Thousands Gone,” “is indivisible from dehumanization of ourselves: the loss of our own identity is the price we pay for our annulment of his.” And later: “We (Americans in general, that) like to point to Negroes and to most of their activities with a kind of tolerant scorn. . . .”

But with my focus on the constant use of words like “we” and “our,” it was easy for eighteen-year-old me in those last days of December  1968 to lose sight of so much of the truth and pain of that and other statements  in “Thousands.” People, I have learned, have a way of taking root in one’s still- developing mind without our knowing it, especially people, like Baldwin, who live in the world of words. How else, then, to explain my every effort to tell in a novel as best I could the stories of slave masters, black and white, and how slavery crushed their souls every morning they got up from their beds  and thanked  their  god for  their  dominion  over others. If I knew the importance of telling that, it was because Baldwin and his kind had planted the idea long ago. (I give him so much credit because he was in the minority of all the black writers I was reading who understood the importance of giving white people their due as full-fledged human beings. Even before I knew I would get into this writing thing, Baldwin told me this: You do not have to fully humanize your black characters by dehumanizing the white ones.)

Traveling with Baldwin through Notes’ “The Harlem Ghetto,” “Journey to Atlanta,” and “Notes of a Native Son,” I was given a grander portrait of the man I had known only through fiction. His fiction certainly had an unprecedented and absolute life of its own, and I might have tried to imagine the man I was dealing with, but those essays afforded me something beyond the postage stamp–sized pictures of him and the few sentences of biography that came with my paperback editions of, say, Go Tell It on the Mountain or Another Country. He would have been Baldwin had I never read those essays, but he would not have been real enough to deign to share a moment  or two with me. The fiction offered a person of enormous humanity. The essays offered a man, a neighbor, or, yes, an older brother.

I had gone through the Washington, D.C., riots after King’s assassination, an explosion that took place some twenty-five years after the Harlem riots Baldwin describes in “Notes.” Different city, different actors, but the same script as that used in the nationwide riots of the 1910s, also a conflagration that included Washington. I was mainly on the periphery of matters that April 1968. (My poor mother had enough to worry about; the last thing I wanted was to add another thousand pounds to her burden and have her see her college-bound child in jail.) And with a summer job and college looming, I had not had time to assess my feelings or consider those of my classmates or neighbors. The wonderful thing about writers like Baldwin is the way we read them and come across passages that are so arresting we become breathless and have to raise our eyes from the page to keep from being spirited away. During those few days in April, I had been out and about enough in my city to sense something new and different about all the shouting and window-breaking and looting people, something ancient and deep.  This is Baldwin explaining  to  me in words writ- ten twelve years after the Harlem riots and thirteen years be- fore the Washington riots: “[S]omething heavy in their stance seemed to indicate that they had all, incredibly, seen a common vision, and on each face there  seemed  to be the same strange, bitter shadow.”

Time after time, he keeps doing this so that it becomes not enough for the reader to just raise the eyes to find breath again. In “Equal in Paris,” there is the sad tale of Baldwin being jailed for days during Christmastime in 1949 after being given a used hotel sheet he did not know had been stolen. Yes. Days. Used sheet. One does not understand the full meaning of “Kafkaesque” until this tale has been absorbed.  Baldwin does not say it outright, but what becomes clear with his journey through a perversely blind justice system is that France, for “all the wretched,” had not moved very far from what the people were enduring before the French Revolution.

It is all so utterly absurd (and this absurdity is another layer of oppression) that it truly becomes humorous. And with that as well is Baldwin’s realization that the people who run such a system are first cousins of those who run things in “my native land.” He cannot escape them, even in a place called Paris, and he is better for knowing this. “In some deep, black, stony, and liberating way, my life, in my own eyes, began during that first year in Paris. . . .”

And so he continues on, page after page, offering light and understanding and a ruthless insistence not so much that he is correct with his vision of matters, but that to ignore his side of things is to see only a partial picture that will not lead to lasting solutions. I can see this best now that I have reread Notes for this essay and now that life has done things to me. Which is why his book is to be treasured.  In small ways, in large ways.

Of the Amsterdam Star-News, he notes in “The Harlem Ghetto” that it “is Republican [no doubt the legacy of Abraham Lincoln freeing the slaves with the belief that it would shorten the Civil War], a political affiliation that has led it into some strange doubletalk. . . .” I had to chuckle. He was writing of possibly gentler, kinder Republicans, who were, in a matter of years, to grow into even more vicious and uncaring political animals. I do not know if Baldwin witnessed any of what happened when black conservatives came out of the woodwork during Ronald Reagan’s presidency. A collection of blacks who to this day have to defend all the white racists in the various spokes of the Republican Party wheel. Doubletalk.

And the entire essay “Journey to Atlanta” is a grand cautionary story about black politicians and white radicals and liberals, who with their own doubletalk seek to mask a paternalism that sees black people as no more than children. As I read his words again, I kept thinking of all the white liberals around Washington, D.C., who wrote racist comments in 2010 to area newspapers and blogs after the black mayor (a rather reviled figure among many black folks) was defeated by another black candidate, complaining that “nigger” voters simply did not know what was good for them. Baldwin—with his tale of his teenage brother David going South—offered his warning in 1948.

One of the wonders of coming back to Notes after such a long time is how “current” Baldwin is. That might sound like a cliché, but in so many instances in our lives we learn that some clichés are built on things solid and familiar and time- less. “Journey to Atlanta” is but one of a hundred examples in Notes. What also comes across, again, is how optimistic James Baldwin was about himself, his world, black people. Even when he describes the awfulness of being black in America, he presents us with an optimism that is sometimes like subtle background music, and sometimes like an insistent drumbeat.  But through it all, with each word—perhaps as evidence of a man certain of his message—he never shouts.
