Kathleen Deagan and Jose Maria Cruxent tell the story of this historic enterprise. Drawing on their ten-year archaeological investigation of the site of La Isabela, along with research into Columbus-era documents, they contrast Spanish expectations of America with the actual events and living conditions at America's first European town. Deagan and Cruxent argue that La Isabela failed not because Columbus was a poor planner but because his vision of America was grounded in European experience and could not be sustained in the face of the realities of American life. Explaining that the original Spanish economic and social frameworks for colonization had to be altered in America in response to the American landscape and the non-elite Spanish and Taino people who occupied it, they shed light on larger questions of American colonialism and the development of Euro-American cultural identity.

A Tremendous Example of Historical Research

I read it in three days.
A must have book for anyone interested in the Conquista and early colonization of the Caribbean and America in General. I also believe that anyone interested in the life and deeds of Christopher Columbus should read this work.
The authors' combination of archaeological excavation with documentary research is excellent and should serve as an example for future research projects. Furthermore, some of the discoveries they made will be quite unexpected and surprising for the general public, and even for those familiar with their work.
Despite the fact that both Deagan and Cruxent are highly regarded experts in Caribbean archaeology, they have written a book that can be enjoyed by the general public.

fascinating

The story of the first Spanish settlement in the New World and its relationship with the local Taino Indians on Hispanola. Established by Columbus in 1493 the settlement faced hard times to carve out an existence in a new land. This story uses archeological evidence and other sources to tell the story. A fascinating history that is both obscure, small and very colorful.

The Birth and Evolution of Today's So Calif Hot Rod Scene

Dean Batchelor grew up with the Southern California hot rod scene, and went on to pioneer much of the postwar LA publishing industry that launched hot rodding as a nationwide cultural phenomenon.
As an author, the late Dean Batchelor was a gem. Reflecting this, American Hot Rod - his last book - is uniquely well written, entertaining, and keenly balanced.
Anyone who ever admired a '32 deuce coupe (or wondered what the Beachboys were singing about) will love it. Lots of pictures; chapters on the birth of drag racing, Bonneville, flathead V8's - and all presented in a highly readable format. A book you'll keep and enjoy.

Dry Lakes and Drag Strips:The American Hot Rod(Muscle Car Color History)2002,ISBN 0760312168,192 pages with a Glossary of terms used then and a color gallery it is the Softcover version/same book as The American Hot Rod (1994,Hardcover,different cover,same author who passed away sadly,Rest in Peace).This book is an excellent source and while the author admits to be a "Ford Guy" as he put it in one of the chapters he covers Four-Bangers as well as Flatheads,Chevys and Caddy/Olds OHV and Buick.I Love the Cover,and opted to get the softcover instead just for the cover and the more Fitting title.It Covers Muroc,Bonneville,Harper,The Publications,The Shops and so fourth,Also Covers the Racing Specials such as Max Balchowsky's Old Yeller and Other Neat cars.I love the Chevy Four stuff and Chevy Engined or GM brand stuff.I just wish there could have been more on that,as the author puts it in one chapter that he saw on a License Plate or sticker:"Real Fords have Chevys In Them".
An overall Stellar Read and great photography both in the black and white and Color,an Bygone era and he manages to somehow not include a status/class envy in it as the rivalry between Hotrodders/Sportscar Crowd did exist which I think is good in this day and age when everyone envies someone.Beautiful Layout and large softcover,I am very happy I own it.

About the Author

Charles is a pioneer of organic and no dig growing since 1983, and is increasingly famous for the outputs and beauty of his gardens. He has created and cropped four no dig, organic market gardens, on stony, silt and clay soils. His growing methods are as applicable in small areas as in large ones. Currently he crops an intensive quarter-acre in Somerset, SW England, for local sales of salad leaves and vegetables. The No-Dig Book We've All Been Waiting For!

This is the book on no dig gardening that we have all been waiting for. Not only does it have over 200 pages with all the information you were hoping to find, it is also one of the best presented books I have handled in a long time. The writing is clear with no hype or waffle and is laid out beautifully making full use of the photographs to create an easy to follow instruction guide that you will come back to again and again.

The authors have a wealth of experience in various climates and will guide you to the most appropriate techniques to use in your own garden. They also took almost all the photographs themselves, in their own gardens and homes, ensuring that the words and pictures work together in perfect balance and harmony.

This book will inspire and enable anyone with a garden or access to enough land to create a no dig organic vegetable garden that will supply abundant produce to their homes.

But I think one of the best things about it is that having taught you how to create your garden and grow your produce, it then switches to how to store and use it, not only in the kitchen but all around your home, making this a book that will become a firm favorite that is likely to spend its time living on the kitchen table rather than on the bookshelf.

In the time it's taken me to write this review, this book has become the best selling book about organic gardening at amazon.co.uk and it deserves to stay that way for a long time and reach the hands of a whole new generation of budding gardeners.

Must-have for the beginner or intermediate magician

Harry Lorayne's "The Magic Book" provides an excellent overview of sleight of hand magic. It's written for the beginner, but it provides enough material that will take months to master. [I consider it one of the two must-reads for the beginner, along with Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic.] The book mainly discusses card magic, coin magic, and mentalism and "mental calculator" magic - with some other miscellaneous magic thrown in. The tricks use everyday objects.

Mr. Lorayne gives very clear and detailed explanations of how you should hold your hands, how to present the tricks, etc. More importantly, he explains *WHY* the tricks work the way they do.

Don't discount these tricks as being "beginner". Just because they are simple, doesn't mean they are not hard-hitting. I've seen tricks out of this book floor a room full of magicians. Magicians have many opportunities to buy one-trick DVDs for $30 or $50. As a beginner, do yourself a favor and get this and/or the Mark Wilson book first. Mastering the magic here will take a beginner (or intermediate) magician a long way into the world of magic. This is a gem well worth the money.

A superb introduction to sleight-of-hand magic!

Harry Lorayne is best known today as a memory expert. Six Las Vegas casinos won't deal Blackjack to him because of his ability to remember cards. However, within the magic fraternity, Lorayne is both a top notch entertainer and original thinker. I've used two card sleights he invented, the halo cut and the ultra-move, to perform what look like card miracles for audiences. In "The Magic Book", Lorayne presents a complete and solid grounding in the basics of sleight-of-hand magic. Starting with cards, he explains the basics of false shuffling, false cuts, double lifts, palming, and forces. His explanation of the jog shuffle is vital for every magician who works with cards. The following two chapters describe effects and routines that use the sleights just explained and essentially self-working card routines. Many of these routines are real stunners, quite literally reputation makers. Whether easy or difficult to perform, the routines give the illusion of the performer being a wizard with cards. Turning from cards, basic coin sleights and routines are explained next, followed by number magic, mental magic and miscellaneous magic. One of the most important parts of the book is the "Afterthoughts" paragraph that follows the description of a particular sleight or routine. Here, Lorayne explains both important points to remember and why certain moves or patter work. These explanations turn the tricks into real magic. Harry Lorayne is one of the best teachers of magic around. "The Magic Book" supports that contention by demonstrating that Lorayne teaches one how to be a magician, that is, how to make real magic happen, as opposed to simply doing tricks. This book is one which belongs in every magician's library.

If you've dabbled in magic and decide you want to get serious, this is the book to get. If you need a gift for a budding young magicion, this is the book to get. Many people know Harry as a memory expert, but magicians also know Harry as an accomplished performer, teacher, and author of magic.
``The Magic Book'' contains descriptions of solid, professional style (no pulling coins out of ears magic here!) close up magic. Indeed, many magicians complained to Harry that he was giving too much away. Their loss is definately your gain.
As a note, this book is in print, having been republished recently by L&L publishing. You might have to search for it. Any magic shop should be able to get it for you, or search the web for a magic supplier.

This is an essential ability in our world.” I agree.

The book’s subtitle refers to getting good at things FAST and staying ready for the future. I think that claim is overcooked. Improvement in some areas requires more time and attention than it does in other areas. Becoming a much better listener, for example, or earning an introverted colleague’s trust. Keep in mind this sound advice from ancient Rome: festina lente. When appropriate, “make haste slowly.” The point is, getting better is — or at least should be — a never-ending process, not an ultimate destination. As for “staying ready for the future,” Peter Drucker insists that much of it is already here and William Gibson agrees, adding that “it’s just not evenly distributed.” Whatever awaits, it seems prudent to prepare for the most likely contingencies.

Andersen is a world-class expert on personal growth and personal development. The information, insights, and counsel she provides in this volume has been gained from hundreds (if not thousands) of her personal as well as professional relationships. With all due respect to the potential value of the material in the book, however, it is essentially worthless unless and until readers apply it effectively in their lives. So I urge each of those who read my brief commentary to embrace this opportunity to embark with Andersen on a journey of personal discovery. Establish with her help the routines and habits on which success (however defined) depends. I presume to add that a best effort — obviously — offers no guarantee of achieving success. That said…

Here’s what Helen Keller suggests: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” I say go for it. With Erika Andersen, you will have splendid company.

You're never too old to learn new things.

At age 78, I am not in the work force but there are still plenty of things I need to learn in order to keep up and function in today's world. I resist the computer world but here I am, writing a review on Amazon. Anderson's use of Michaelangelo as an exemplar of her method was perfect. It made each step more understandable and much more interesting. The author's voice was friendly, understanding and encouraging. I loved her descriptions of her own "being bad." The whole experience has given me the courage to try the things I've been putting off.

The Real Thing

A consistent theme within Erika’s previous titles is providing a clear and actionable framework for self-improvement, and this book is no exception. After reading Be Bad First, I was struck by how I could relate the concepts embedded in it to real life experiences. I once had the opportunity to work with a successful entrepreneur who grew a business from an idea to a large and thriving enterprise. He did this by having a clear vision of where he wanted to go, being aware of changes that he needed to make to get there, continually questioning the next move, and having the tenacity to overcome a few false starts along the way. This lines up well with what is covered in the book.

Most often books of this type fail my personal litmus test by being somewhat “cushy”, but this book is definitely not one of those.
