Chompy, Bloody Fun!

Okay, so I made the mistake of reading this one a bit after that poor little boy was killed by a gator at Disneyworld. I'm going to start by saying that if that tragedy is still fresh for you, you might want to stay clear for a bit.

Now, the title Alligators is a bit misleading here. The gators in the book are rather mild and laconic gators. The real problem in this book is the Caimans. Hungry, bloodthirsty, angry Caimans. They're free, they're hungry, and they find the UK to be a delightful source of food.

The body count is high in this one. And as well as our chompy critters, we also have a human who is just as dangerous and even more deranged.

The book is super fast paced, extremely bloody, and a whole lot of chompy fun.

I first read Guy N. Smith many, many years ago and I'm delighted to find so many of his books now available on Kindle. Looking forward to my next Smith read soon!

Same story...different villain....

I first became award of this author with his "CRABS" series books...I like weird science fiction and this fit the bill for sure...not believable but entertaining...I like when the bad guys (and girls) get their well deserved comeuppance!! When I purchased "Alligators" I was hoping for another entertaining read...but all he did was substitute the alligators for crabs...the formula was EXACTLY the same, the heroes were the same and the bad guys showed the EXACT same character flaws. Don't think I'll be risking any more cash on Mr. Smith's writing...

Worth a Purchase

Not my favorite non-CRABS Smith book, but enjoyable and a nice companion piece to Snakes. Just don't expect a bunch of full grown alligators running around attacking people because the focus is primarily regulated to one gator and her diminutive offspring. A family trapped on a bed thinking they may starve to death because of one baby alligator waiting to attack them is quite ridiculous and laugh-out-loud funny.

Very Crowleyan in all the best ways; an excellent look at the yogic philosophies

Definitely one of the most readable of Crowley texts, perhaps because they were all lectures, Yoga is not an intro to yoga but rather a discussion of its tenets. AC digs into astrological principles, physics, esoteric knowledge, and links it all to magick.

This is a continuation of Book 4, Part 1, but is more approachable for the layman. When I was in my Crowley phase in the mid-90s, reading all I could find, I got used to his style and it was all pretty digestible. After 15 years away, many of his texts seem rather arcane again without enough warm-up, but Yoga stands out as one of his most lucid and clear tomes.

The first part, Yoga For Yahoos, is more fun than part two, Yoga For Yellowbellies, but both are worth reading, and at a mere 80 pages it's hardly backbreaking literary labor. There are plenty of very profound thoughts here, of varying depths, and you will not leave this work without many new and useful ideas.

If you've done some yoga and know your Patanjali, etc, then move along to Aleister and see what you can learn from one of the most unusual and fascinating minds of the past hundred years.

PS My copy of this small, blue hardcover book, published by the Sangreal Foundation in 1969, was in perfect shape for all of five bucks when I found it in some dusty corner in some old shoppe a few years back. Look around at your local tiny used book stores and you might find this at a fraction of the 75 the sole seller here wants. It's a wonderful edition and blows the paperback version out of the water. It feels like an AC book should, and has that old book smell that makes the Crowleyan message even more apropos.

Great way to spend the summer!

Published by Scouts UK with a forward by Bear Grylls The Outdoor Adventure Manual is packed with practical Scout skill tutorials ; tents and camping, fire, food and cooking, tools and gadgets, knots and lashings, navigation, first aid and survival, and more.
Skills are explained step-by-step with photos and illustrations that really bring them to life. I've read a number of `how-to' books that I suspected were written by people who had not actually tried out what they were describing. The Outdoor Adventure Manual leverages the know-how of many experienced authors to provide practical instruction that is inspiring and easy to follow.
The book is not an attempt at an exhaustive reference work, it's a collection of adventurous projects, useful knowledge and activities that any Scout would enjoy. Within it's pages a Scout can learn to build a shelter, make cordage out of natural materials, carve a wooden spoon, explore natural navigation, and sharpen their tracking skills.
Some of the information is specific to the British Isles and to Scouts U.K. (plant and animal identification for example) but that's not to say they aren't interesting and practical for North America. It is also a great opportunity to learn something more about the world of Scouting.
Doing the projects and trying out the skills in The Outdoor Adventure Manual would be a great way to spend a summer. It's a colorful. engaging, hardcover book that encourages Scouts to get outdoors and get active - kind of makes me wish I was twelve year's old again!

Nice introduction to the outdoors!

If you enjoy the outdoors already, you may not get a lot out of this, but it is a beautifully illustrated, well-written introduction to a wide variety of outdoor activities, from hiking to ice camping to rock climbing. The focus is on just getting started doing cool and exciting things, and it is written for a young teen audience (such as British Scouts, in case you did not figure that out already!)

It is not really designed for field use, which is a little unfortunate, but it is a nice addition to an outdoor or youth activity library.

Depends on what your looking for...

Very basic, good for advanced cubscouts (Weeblo) or early boyscout (Tenderfoot). Don't expect a survival manual, or advanced skills. Supplements the standard scout manual well, although many bushcraft and survival books will augment better.
