The product was in new condition as advertised. A little more expensive (about $20) more than other places I've seen it, but quality-wise it was worth it.

Great overview of applied math

The book covers basic college level math concepts as they apply to geology, including statistics. It has problems to work with answers, as well as spreadsheet exercises. When I took geology in college it was primarily descriptive. Now with technology, it is much more quantitative. This book bridges the gap.

Great realistic story

I enjoyed this book throughout. The author created terrific characters whose personalities were shown in interesting ways. Also, the author managed to portray a real time in American history through somebody in the times view, which she did remarkably well and enhanced the stories meaning with it. I especially enjoyed this book because this is a part of history in world war two not many people choose to write about because it was overshadowed by the horrors of the Holocaust and what happened in the Pacific, but the author still made a great story out of a part of history that should be remembered more than it is.

A Diamond in the Desert tells the story of Tetsu and his family--Japanese people forced to live in an internment camp, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Tetsu is a thoughtful, intelligent boy who examines his world with the eyes of a philosopher and reports on it with the pen of a poet. He sees that the world is harsh:

"Grief lived at Gila River. It collected in the barracks and the mess halls and the latrines. It was there in Mama's face late at night when she thought I wasn't looking.

"We walked around it cautiously, like it was a spiked saguaro cactus, bulky arms twisted high, extended on all sides."

Tetsu also sees that the world is good:

"Other players came, filling in the open spots, second and left and everything else to form one team. It was like Christmas morning had come in April, and everyone got a new bike, and pancakes were cooking, and outside it was snowing. It was a feeling like that."

Simple pleasures. That's what you want most when the world is beating against you, trying to strip you of your dignity.

Tetsu struggles with the way others see him and with the way he sees himself, I think. He has to learn to shoulder his responsibilities but also to let go of past mistakes to keep on living. He has to learn to forgive others and to allow others to forgive him, if he is to emerge from his interment camp experience with joy instead of bitterness.

I loved this book. It's a very fast read, deliciously written, and will be great for teachers or homeschoolers to use in history, creative writing, social studies, and worldview classes.

The Key: Overcome The Interruptions

Orville, the Indiana farm boy, loved to play baseball. In blue jeans, sport shirt, and tennis shoes it was never uncommon to find him on a corner lot playing baseball with his friends. And they all loved throwing that little white ball with the stitches around all day.
But Orville's uncle had other ideas. Work was a necessity. Playing baseball was foolish. Consistently, his uncle laid a guilt trip on the poor boy nagging him all the time and insisting that he work on the farm when he wasn't in school. It was a constant interruption.
Likewise, in this story, Tetsu loved to play baseball. He could do it all day. But after Pearl Harbor was bombed Tetsu and his family were forced to move to an internment camp in the Arizona desert with other Japanese Americans. Thus there would be no more baseball which interrupted the love of Tetsu's life. That is until a man came along and started a new baseball team in the desert which thrilled Tetse far beyond words could accurately describe. And so an exciting baseball story unfolds. Great!
Kathryn Fitzmaurice, the author, does an excellent job here using a baseball platform to share some real life experiences in an historical fiction setting. Kids of all ages who read this story will have the opportunity to easily identify with its characters and learn something about history. Marvin P. Ferguson, author of BOYS ON THE GOLD COAST.

THRILLED with my Pimsleur course!!!

This was just the GREATEST value for me; I am thrilled with this product. I have bought four separate types of Spanish programs, but this Pimsleur is the most usable for me. I study my Spanish in the car, so since I drive every day, I study my Spanish every day. Right there, it has a big advantage over programs I planned on using but never did. (I don't do a full lesson each day, and I stop it often, but I've still made great progress..) My husband likes an app on his phone, but again, life happened and he stopped, but since I drive every single day, I am now on Spanish 5, and am actually understanding and speaking more and more Spanish! I DID use another audio program, but it was nowhere near as good as Pimsleur, because the material wasn't organized as sequentially, and didn't review as thoroughly, so finally I got so frustrated. Plus, the other program had a vocabulary lesson that was just a long string of words, ugh. And to loud music no less, so it was incredibly aggravating. Pimsleur is SO well organized, and you go over it and over it until the responses become natural. You aren't thinking of all the rules and endings of verbs, etc.; you just answer, like you learned language in the first place. And it is fun for me to feel successful; they get you talking fast. And this seller was amazingly prompt and nice!

Pimsleur Works!

Pimsleur is the best method I have found for learning a language. The periodic repetition of key words and phrases is a great method for actually remembering words. Most tapes have no science to them whatsoever. Pimsleur is a scientific and tested and proved language tool. Rosetta Stone does not compare. The seller was excellent as well and I received my Cd's relatively quickly and in perfect condition at a great price.

A Fantasy Filled With Love, Magic and Celtic Lore- Excellent

Since my childhood, I have always loved a good fairy tale and Juliet Marillier's Celtic-themed Sevenwaters trilogy is a real winner - for both teens and adults alike. "Son of the Shadows," book two in the series after "Daughter of the Forest," is every bit as good as book one. A second generation of the Sevenwaters family is introduced here and many familiar folks from the first book have roles to play also. The characters are wonderful. They change and grow so much throughout the novels, that it is easy to care about and empathize with them. And the magic is...well, simply magical.
Sorcha, the "Daughter of the Forest," married her beloved British husband Hugh of Harrowfield, who gave up his ancestral home to move to Erin and live with his wife at Sevenwaters. Together they became stewards of the enormous estate which, with its magical forest and strong ties to the old, druidic faith, prosper under their care. They have been blessed with three children: Niamh, who is as beautiful as she is willful; Sean, strong and capable like his father; and Sean's twin, Liadan, who, like her mother, is a gifted healer and seer.
Liadan's birth was not foreseen by the fairy folk, the Tuatha de Danaan, who so frequently intervene in the lives of this family. It is they who are determined to preserve the old ways through those of the Sevenwaters line. Neither Liadan's mother nor the magical beings who populate the age-old forests of Sevenwaters had counted on Sean, (whose birth was predicted as part of a prophecy), having a twin sister. This lack of foresight gave Liadan the power to change things previously ordained - to defy prophesy. But Liadan does not want power nor does she want a position of leadership in the clan. She is shy, and prefers the art and lore of healing to the more common pleasures of girls her age. Yet, it is Liadan who is finds herself thrust into the midst of the enemy, and taken away from the family that has loved and sheltered her. She is carried off to heal a dying outlaw, a mercenary in the band of the notorious and feared "Painted Man."
This is a beautiful tale of familial devotion, self-sacrifice, steadfastness, adventure, travel - and above all, of love that must be strong enough to defy all odds - with a hero who is worthy of the exceptional young woman Liadan is. Although the plot and subplots are very strong this novel is definitely character driven. And, as noted before, Ms. Marillier develops her cast of characters and gives them great depth. As with all fairy tales, there is magic at work here, just the right amount to awe but not to disturb reality too much or take away from the characters' independence and ability to choose.
Although "Son of the Shadows" can be read and enjoyed without reading the first book, I strongly recommend reading "Daughter Of The Forest" before picking-up this terrific novel. ENJOY!

It has a grip on you

It has a grip on you. The second book of this triology is just as great as the first one. The daughter of Sorcha and Hugh is telling the story. The author knows how to keep you curious of what comes next and also keeps your breath away to find out how a curtain adventure is turning out. Already bought the third book.

A brilliant compliment to it's predecessor

I stumbled along Marillier's book Daughter of the Forest when a friend that I swap books with gave it to me. I was somewhat skeptical at first but when I picked it up I couldn't put it down. I bought Son of the Shadows the day it came out and spent a sleepless night finishing it. I am an avid Science Fiction and Fantasy reader and I can honestly say there have been very few authors who have been able to lure me so completely into the characters world. I can not think of a better compliment to give Marillier than to say her character developments remind me of Orson Scott Card's. She makes you understand why people are the way they are and to sympathize. Son of the Shadows in a continuation of the Seven Waters Trilogy and tells the story of Liadan, the daughter of Sorcha and Hugh (who were the main characters of Daughter of the Forest). While not as fantasy driven as Daughter of the Forest it still keeps hold the fairy tale basis established in the first book. Marillier's is so good at pulling you into her story that every pain and joy she writes becomes your own, not allowing you to see it as just a story. It is an excellent compliment to Daughter of the Forest which has quickly become one of my favorites and I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates a well thought out and well written story .

A must have with Cubase 6 software

Of all the books out there on Steinberg's Cubase 6; this book is the best. Why? The most important aspect of this book is that it defines some of Steinberg's terminology. Why is this important? Primarily it helps in understanding Steinberg's pdf manual and it helps the user understand the program. Some of these terms are opaque to the novice and ambiguous to intermediate engineers. By defining the terms the book opens up the Steinberg pdf. For the general to intermediate you will probably never have to reference the pdf. When you know the terminology and there is something not covered by this book you will now understand what Steinberg's pdf means.

I have used various versions of Cubase since VST24 and still find this book very useful. The book is written in a semi-tutorial style. It is not a step-by-step tutorial by any means. However, it does tell you what a feature does and tells you how to access it. For example, it will tell you what a vst effect does and tells you how to put it in a send or insert. The book will also give the reader the reason why to choose a send or insert slot. If you really need a step-by-step tutorial there are plenty out there but few will give you a strong understanding of the "why". Plus you can't just look something up in seconds and continue working.

I strongly recommend purchasing this book as a supplement to the pdf. No, that's not right it should be purchased as a replacement for the pdf. because 90% of what you need to know is in this book.

When I bought Cubase, I wondered what I had gotten myself into. I bought this book immediately thereafter and am so glad. It puts everything in simple form and will have you composing in no time. Cubase is the most amazing software I have ever seen and this book is more important than the manual. Spend the extra money and get this!!

EXCELLENT reference!

It was virtually too costly to print the 700 page manual but this book covers everything you need to know about Cubase 6.
I imagine the book would would even be more productive if it came with a DVD with tutorials but just the fact that I have
an actual printed document makes reading so much easier and accessible especially when your working with the program.

Zandri's New Adventure Series Begin

The Shroud Key is kind of a departure for Vincent Zandri, who, although he's a versatile writer, is more widely known for his dark crime fiction. This one, though, is a straight up, Indiana Jones-style adventure story, and Zandri pulls it off very nicely. His hero, Chase Baker, is an author, tour guide in Italy, and incurable ladies man who gets drawn into a hunt for that most fabled of Biblical archaeological relics-- the bones of Jesus himself.
Dan Brown territory, you might be thinking. Maybe so, but Zandri is a much stronger writer than Brown, and he also has a sense of humor. Although the stakes are high in The Shroud Key, I got a nice sense that Zandri was grinning the entire time he was writing it, that he was having a blast.
Chase Baker is a rogue, and a bit of a scoundrel-- he has a fondness for other men's wives, for instance-- and at first you probably won't be sure if you like him. But as the novel moves along at its breakneck clip, more facets of Chase's personality emerge, and you realize there's more to him than what initially meet the eye. He's a flawed but ultimately decent hero. I'm looking forward to his next adventure.

fun thrill ride

If you liked the Indiana Jones franchise of films, you'll love Chase Baker and the Shroud Key. I happen to love stories related to archeology and ancient mysteries and Zandri doesn't disappoint with a fast-paced thrill ride that will keep you guessing until the last page.

Cookie Cutter Characters and Contrived Plot

Contrived. Cookie-cutter characterization. And, slightly unbelievable. The protagonist is a sex feign and an absent father who is way behind on child support. I didn't really care much about Chase Baker anymore. Poorly written. One minute Baker is held at gunpoint on a train, the next he is on the platform of the train with no description of his escape. Two minutes later he is french-kissing his disguised nun friend Anya on the stairs of another train to Turin. Just plain stupid. Moving on.
