Tom Arny is an Emeritus professor in the Astronomy Department at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was associated there with the Five College Astronomy Program(comprising faculty from U-Mass, Amhurst, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke, and Smith Colleges). Dr. Arny received his undergraduate degree from Haverford College and his Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Arizona. In addition to his interest in astronomy, he has a long-standing fascination with the natural world: weather (especially atmospheric optics such as rainbows), birds, wildflowers, and butterflies. This Book Desperately Needs a Reboot.

Even though I was featured in the 2007 version of this book I have to admit that recent editions have been disappointing. There aren't many new sources to send your promotional materials and queries to. The ones who remain in the book are just regurgitated entries from previous years. Perhaps it's time for Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market to call it a day and cease publication. Either that or commit to a complete reboot with all new entries. As a freelancer with over 30 years worth of experience I have to say this book has fallen upon some hard times.

Disappointing. I bought it in part because they promise free access to their web resource, so when it arrived I eagerly went online to sign up. The resources they tout in the book include supposed samples of designer contacts. Well let me tell you there is absolutely nothing of the sort on their website at all! False advertisement at its worst. When I contacted customer support I received no reply! The book itself is just a regurgitated version of the old editions. Don't waste your money! Better go and self promote on FB. You will get more business than from reading this book.

for sensor networks and MANETs

This book's subject overlaps with the cases of a MANET [Mobile Ad Hoc Network] and a sensor network, where the latter might typically be composed of static nodes. The embedded systems of the book often have no graphical user interface like those of personal computers or cellphones.

The nodes comprising an embedded system have to talk to each other wirelessly; there seems to be no practical case where the nodes are wired to each other. So the book delves into issues like how might the nodes authenticate each other. This is a hard problem given that the obvious PKI approach consumes a lot of clock cycles and hence precious power. Often the nodes are severely power constrained. But a symmetric encryption entails that nodes know a common key. How is this distributed? Perhaps before deployment, when the network owner has physical possession of all the nodes. But after deployment, if a node is then taken over by an adversary, she might be able to get the common key and hence break the encryption.

For efficiency in communications, one chapter suggests a cross layer approach to developing new protocols. A very promising idea, as suggested from early simulations.

Lessons in life...

I really liked this book and love this author. Some of the situations are very far fetched and I wish it was based on a true story rather than totally fiction. The book reveals more about the heirarchy of the church and the haughtiness and complete self-centered egos of the wealthy in our world. The homeless are seen as sweethearts and I know so many are - but what this Bishop did was truly dangerous and as a woman I could never consider riding the rails. I saw the popmpous attitudes of the rich - saw myself in the judgmental attitudes. This book provides real food for thought and I pray that more priests and ministers of the church become more passionate and caring about the poor and downtrodden just as Jesus did. Our Lord never owned property and was a magnet for the ill, depressed and oppressed. A mirror is put up to our self - righteousness. The challenge is, "now what?"

J. Girzone has once again brought the spirit of Jesus into modern times through the homeless Bishop. This is an uplifting book with many surprises. It makes you laugh, cry, and get angry. Mostly, it will open your eyes to people who may have been invisible to you.

This is Fr. Girzone's best work since Joshua....what a wonderful read. A heartwarming story that speaks to what our church can and should be. This should be required reading for clergy and laity alike.

On November 14, 2002, the 100th anniversary of the world famous Teddy Bear will be celebrated. The origin of the Teddy Bear stems from an occasion when President Theodore Roosevelt visited the wilderness of Mississippi in hopes of killing a black bear. He was guided on this hunt by Holt Collier, a former slave, Confederate veteran (yes–amazing though it sounds), Texas cowboy, Mississippi lawman, and noted pioneer. He is known to have killed over 3,000 bear in his lifetime, more than Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett combined. Roosevelt, who also hunted with Collier in Louisiana in 1907, called him "the greatest hunter and guide I have ever known."

Collier killed many white men, several in Mississippi. One exciting incident in his biography is a detailed description of the gunfight at Washburn's Ferry where Collier out-drew the notorious Louisiana outlaw Travis Elmore Sage. He was prosecuted only once–for the murder of a Union captain after the Civil War–but he was acquitted. Collier was famous nationally during his lifetime, but the racial atmosphere in Mississippi for the last eighty years kept his remarkable story from being told. There is no detailed and authoritative work on Holt Collier or the origin of the Teddy Bear other than this book.

Minor Ferris Buchanan is a native Mississippian. He graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1973 with a degree in History and English, graduated from Mississippi College School of Law in 1978, and has been a litigation attorney for twenty-three years. He has researched the life of Holt Collier for a decade over archival collections through much of the country.

Fascinating story

Holt Collier was one of Mississippi's most interesting minor historical figures. His life, his presence as a man transcended the times in which he lived. Mr. Buchanan's well written book tells Collier's fascinating story, bringing to life a man little known outside of Mississippi.

I noticed that one reviewer insists that there were no black confederate soldiers. There is considerable history to the contrary. Not only did some blacks fight for the South, but so did Native Americans, Hispanics, and various orientals, particularly men of Filipino origin from Louisiana. I have read that two of the sons of the original Siamese twins, actually part Thai, Chinese and Malay, fought for the Confederacy. In addition to Jewish soldiers, one of the most important members of the Confederate government, Judah Benjamin, was Jewish.

A Great Biography of a Little Known Historical Figure

Although this book would probably be considered politically incorrect by the black community because it relate Collier's devotion to the South and the Confederate cause, it fills a void that's long existed in telling the true history of Mississippi's past. This book takes us through Collier's entire life from slavery through his final years in retirement when he became invisible and forgotten in the annals of history. It also does a good job in telling the story of Teddy Roosevelt bear hunt that led to the creation of the "Teddy Bear" as a result of the Nast cartoon. And it tells us that the legend that grew out of that hunt was in many ways incorrect or an oversimplification of the event.

Minor Buchanan does not approach this as a quick book project to make a few bucks by assembling a collection of anecdotes he collected around the state. He poured all his free time into research for quite a long time before even getting to the point of putting together a cogent retelling of Holt Collier's life. I've had the pleasure of knowing Minor for some years and can say that I have seen how devoted he has been to this project and how much he likes to talk about the history of this unique individual, especially things that he learned that simply couldn't be fit into the book's written word.
