About the Author
Valerie L. Winslow has been painting and drawing the human figure professionally for nearly four decades and is an expert in the field of figurative art. She is the author and artist of Classic Human Anatomy, hailed by Library Journal as a “significant contribution to the literature of art reference.” Since 1979 Winslow has taught at well-known institutions including the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), and Pixar Animation Studios. Winslow is currently a full-time faculty member and the anatomy coordinator at San Francisco’s Academy of Art University. Many of her works are in private collections, and she has won numerous museum awards. She lives in Santa Rosa, California. A Must-Have for the Figure Drawing Enthusiast!!

If I could rate higher than five stars, I would!
Over the years, I've collected TONS of anatomy books in an attempt to improve my figure drawing skills. The figure is one of my absolute favorite things to draw. As I'm working on écorché for an anatomy class I'm taking, so I finally pulled this book off the shelf (I've had it since January, 2016). As I worked through the bones and muscles in the section on the torso, I had to pause and get up to write this review because there is no doubt. This is THE best book on anatomy that I've ever studied. And of all the books that I have on my shelf (more than two rows on a large shelf)! I've always wondered what happens to this bone or that bone and this muscle or that muscle when the person is in a position other than standing with weight distributed on both feet. I haven't gone through all sections, but in the torso section, the author illustrated movement showing the bones and/or muscles and how they act in that movement. I've attached a couple of pictures, one of the clavicle and its movement and the other of the muscles of the scapula and how they react.
If anyone else is like me and wondered these things, this book is a must-have for figure drawing enthusiasts! With that said, it's not for the beginner. It focuses more on how bones/muscles work together and what's going on under the skin than it does on actual drawing assignments like many of the other books that I have. They served their purpose. This book builds on the skills acquired from the how-to-draw books and/or classes. However, if you purchased it and you're a beginner, and you feel it's not a good purchase for you, for whatever reason, I'd suggest that you keep it, if you plan to continue studying the figure because one day soon, this book will be a precious gem in your collection. If you are seasoned but looking for "something more", this book is definitely a great buy.

The only anatomy book you’ll need if you’re an artist.

I bought this book with high expectations and it has exceeded my expectations. The author makes anatomy easy to learn with great examples both written and drawn out. Before you get started learning the bones and the muscles the author introduces keywords that describe the movements of the muscles. Once you understand those keywords the author introduces you to the bones, then the muscles. She divides the chapters into different sections of the body to make it easier to remember. If you cannot remember what the actual name for the muscle or bone is the author almost always included its alternative and common names.
I’ve read many other anatomy books for artists, but none of them can compare to this one. This book explains the parts of the body clearly for everyone regardless their age to learn from.

A must-have for anyone interesting in any artistic depiction of the human figure

This book is amazing. I had to stop what im doing and write this review. Im only half way through and I have already learned so much and im not necessarily a beginner when it comes to anatomy. Everything is very much in depth and to the point. Pretty much anything an artist has ever wondered about the human figure and how to compose it is in this book. Definitely recommend it.
